Highlights

Eleven kilos in 270 grams

A CI4+ body is as rigid as metal and cannot corrode, which is how a reel this light carries a drag figure this high without flexing under it.

CI4+ body

Carbon-reinforced composite - metal rigidity, far less weight, and no corrosion.

MicroModule II gears

More, finer teeth meshed at once, which is what makes the retrieve feel seamless.

11 kg drag at 270 g

The power-to-weight figure that defines this reel.

X-SHIP and X-Protect

Twin-supported pinion for efficiency under load, plus water repellency at the line roller.

About this product

Spinning Fishing Reel – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Tanzania.

The 4000 is the size most people use most, and the Ultegra is where that size gets properly engineered. Three things separate it from the Sedona a tier below. The body is CI4+, a carbon-reinforced composite with the rigidity of aluminium at much less weight and no possibility of corrosion. The gears are MicroModule II – more teeth, each finer, so more of them are in mesh at any moment, which is what takes the last trace of grain out of the retrieve. And X-SHIP carries the pinion gear on bearings at both ends, keeping it in line with the drive gear even at full drag, which is precisely when cheaper reels start to feel rough.

The plain 4000 is geared at 5.3:1 for 87 cm per crank, which is the balanced middle: quick enough for lure work, with more torque than a high-geared reel when you are winding a fish in against a current. Maximum drag is 11 kg and the spool holds 490 metres of PE 1 or 180 metres of 0.30 mm mono.

SilentDrive tightens the internal tolerances so the reel is quiet and feels solid, and X-Protect gives water-repellent protection at the line roller. It is not a sealed SW-series reel, so rinse and dry it after any sea session.

Shimano make the same size as a 4000XG at 6.2:1 and 101 cm per crank if you want faster pickup, and a newer FD generation exists in which the 4000 appears as a 4000XGD at 265 g. Ask us which we have in stock.

Buying a Spinning Fishing Reel in Tanzania

361 Degrees Adventure keeps the spinning fishing reel at our showroom in Upanga, Dar es Salaam, with delivery countrywide across Tanzania. Come and handle it before you buy, or order online and collect.

Every spinning fishing reel is checked in store before it leaves us, and our staff use the same kit in the field, so you get an honest answer on fit and sizing rather than a sales pitch.

Not sure which spinning fishing reel suits you? Call or message the showroom and we will talk you through the options that are actually in stock in Dar es Salaam.

Spare parts and replacements for the spinning fishing reel are easier to get here than on an overseas order, which matters once the gear is in use.

Questions

Good to know

Plain 4000 or 4000XG - which should I buy?

The XG at 6.2:1 returns 101 cm per crank against this reel 87 cm, with identical drag, weight and capacity. Take the XG for fast lure work and surface fishing; take the plain 4000 for bait, bottom fishing and general use, where the extra torque is worth more than the speed.

What makes it worth more than a Sedona?

The CI4+ body, MicroModule II gearing and X-SHIP. All three are about how the reel feels under load and how it feels after several seasons, rather than about the headline numbers - the drag figure is the same 11 kg on both.

Is CI4+ better than a metal body?

Different rather than better. CI4+ has the rigidity of aluminium at much lower weight and cannot corrode. A metal body is stiffer under extreme load, which is why the big saltwater reels use it. At 270 g, CI4+ is the right choice.

What can I catch with it here?

Kingfish, queenfish, barracuda, trevally and snapper from the rocks, a jetty or a boat, and catfish, tilapia and Nile perch inland. The 4000 size with 11 kg of drag covers most inshore fishing on this coast.

What rod should I pair it with?

A 7 ft to 9 ft spinning rod rated around 15-40 g. Our CRONY Aggress IV AGS4-802MH is a natural match at 8 ft.

Is it a saltwater reel?

It carries X-Protect water repellency but it is not a sealed SW-series reel. Fine inshore with a proper rinse; for weekly sea fishing, buy a Spheros SW.

What do the letters after the model number mean?

On Shimano spinning reels the two-letter code is drag type plus generation: F = front drag, and the second letter steps forward with each release. A C in front of the size means a compact body carrying a larger spool. HG = high gear, XG = extra-high gear, PG = power gear, S = shallow spool.

How do I look after it in salt water?

Rinse under a gentle spray of fresh water after every sea session - never a hard jet, which drives salt past the seals - then stand it upright to drain and dry. Back the drag off before storage, and oil the handle knob and bail pivot every few trips.
