If you asked which single spinning reel size covers the most fishing, the answer would be a C3000. It is the compromise everyone eventually arrives at: a 3000-size spool – enough line and enough drag for real fish – fitted to a 2500-size body, so the reel stays light and balances on an ordinary 7 ft rod rather than hanging off the front of it.
The numbers bear that out. Nine kilos of maximum drag is a substantial figure for a reel at this price, and 400 metres of PE 1 on the spool is more line than most people will ever run off. At 255 grams the reel is light enough to cast several hundred times in an afternoon without your wrist objecting.
The gearing is the standard 5.0:1, returning 73 cm per crank. That is deliberately moderate: enough speed for general lure work, with more cranking torque than a high-geared reel when you are winding a fish in against a current. Shimano also make a C3000HG at 6.2:1 and 91 cm per crank if you want faster pickup.
Build is value tier and straightforward – graphite body and rotor, 3+1 bearings, G-Free body geometry and the AR-C spool that gives these reels their casting distance. There is no water sealing, so rinse and dry it after any sea session.
