Highlights

Eleven kilos of drag at 305 grams

That is a lot of stopping power for an entry-level reel, and the high gearing gives you 93 cm of line a crank - fast enough to keep up with a fish swimming at you.

11 kg maximum drag

Unusually strong for a value reel - it is the headline number on this one.

High gear, 93 cm per crank

Fast pickup for lure fishing and for taking up slack when a fish runs towards you.

305 g

Light enough to cast all day on a 7 ft to 9 ft rod.

G-Free body and AR-C spool

Shimano's balance and casting geometry, which is what you are really paying for.

Product description

About this product

Shimano Nexave FI – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Tanzania.

The 4000 is the size most anglers should own first, and the HG – high gear – version is the one to choose if you fish lures. At 5.8:1 it returns 93 cm of line per crank, which is quick enough to work a popper or a metal slice properly and, more importantly, to take up slack instantly when a fish turns and swims at you. A slow reel loses fish that way.

The specification that stands out is the drag: 11 kg on a reel at this price is genuinely unusual, and it is what makes this reel viable for inshore saltwater rather than only for the lakes. Combine it with 490 m of PE 1 on the spool and you have a reel that can let a fish run and then stop it.

The rest is value-tier and honest: a graphite body and rotor, 3+1 bearings, G-Free body geometry that pulls the centre of mass back towards the rod, and the AR-C spool that gives these reels their casting distance. There is no water sealing, so rinse and dry it after any sea session.

One thing to be sure of when comparing prices elsewhere: Shimano makes the Nexave FI 4000 in two gearings. The plain 4000 is 5.2:1 and returns 83 cm a crank; the 4000HG on this page is 5.8:1 and returns 93 cm. Drag, weight and capacity are the same. If a listing does not say which, it is worth asking.

Buying a Shimano Nexave FI in Tanzania

361 Degrees Adventure keeps the Shimano Nexave FI at our showroom in Upanga, Dar es Salaam, with delivery countrywide across Tanzania. Come and handle it before you buy, or order online and collect.

Every Shimano Nexave FI is checked in store before it leaves us, and our staff use the same kit in the field, so you get an honest answer on fit and sizing rather than a sales pitch.

Not sure which Shimano Nexave FI suits you? Call or message the showroom and we will talk you through the options that are actually in stock in Dar es Salaam.

Spare parts and replacements for the Shimano Nexave FI are easier to get here than on an overseas order, which matters once the gear is in use.

Questions

Good to know

What is the difference between the 4000 and the 4000HG?

Gearing only. The plain 4000 is 5.2:1 and returns 83 cm per crank; the HG is 5.8:1 and returns 93 cm. Drag, weight and line capacity are identical. Take the HG for lure fishing, the plain for bait and bottom work where torque matters more than speed.

Is 11 kg of drag really right for a reel at this price?

It is Shimano's published figure and it is the standout number on this reel. What you do not get at this price is sealing or a metal body, so treat the drag figure as the reel's ceiling rather than its everyday setting.

What can I catch with it here?

Snapper, queenfish, barracuda, kingfish and small to mid trevally from a jetty, the rocks or a boat; catfish, tilapia and Nile perch inland. It is the most useful single reel size on this coast.

What rod should I pair it with?

A 7 ft to 9 ft spinning rod rated around 15-40 g. Our CRONY Aggress IV AGS4-802MH is a natural match.

What do the letters after the model number mean?

On Shimano spinning reels the two-letter code is drag type plus generation: F = front drag, and the second letter steps forward with each release (FE, FI, FJ and so on). A C in front of the size means a compact body carrying a larger spool. HG = high gear, XG = extra-high gear, PG = power gear, S = shallow spool.

Is it a saltwater reel?

Shimano gives it no saltwater rating and it is not sealed. It is fine for inshore use with a proper fresh-water rinse afterwards. For weekly sea use, the Spheros SW is the sealed option.

Should I use braid or mono?

Braid for lure fishing - the high gearing and the AR-C spool are both built around it, and the spool takes 490 m of PE 1. Mono for bait fishing, where a little stretch is helpful.

How do I look after a reel in salt water?

Rinse it under a gentle spray of fresh water after every sea session - never a hard jet, which drives salt past the seals - then stand it upright to drain and dry. Back the drag right off before storage so the washers are not compressed, and put a drop of reel oil on the handle knob and bail pivot every few trips.
