Highlights

A sacrificial layer over the willow

A bat face is damaged by abrasion and by the small surface splits that open when a ball lands on a lifted fibre. An anti-scuff sheet takes both instead of the willow. When it is torn you peel it off and fit another - which is a great deal cheaper than a new bat.

Self adhesive

Sticks to the face of the blade. No tools, no glue and no skill required.

Protects against abrasion and splits

Takes the surface damage that would otherwise go into the willow.

Sacrificial

Replace it when it is worn or torn. A sheet costs a tiny fraction of a bat.

Fit it after knocking in

The face has to be knocked in first; the sheet goes on afterwards.

About this product

Anti Scuff Sheet Fiber – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Tanzania.

This is a self-adhesive anti-scuff sheet for the face of a cricket bat.

A bat face fails in two ways. The obvious one is abrasion – the surface is worn away by repeated ball contact and by the abrasive matting and hard grounds used for practice. The less obvious and more damaging one is surface splitting: a fibre lifts slightly, a ball catches it, and the lift becomes a crack that opens further with every shot.

A protective sheet intercepts both. The abrasion goes into the film instead of the willow, and the film holds the surface fibres down so they cannot lift and catch. When the sheet is worn or torn, you peel it off and fit another one – a cost of almost nothing against the cost of a bat.

Two rules on fitting. First, knock the bat in before applying it – the sheet protects the face but does not compress it, and a bat that has not been knocked in will still break at the edge. Second, clean and dry the face thoroughly before applying, and work from the middle outwards to avoid trapping air.

Do not run the sheet over the edges. The edges need to stay bare willow so you can see what is happening to them and so they can be worked with a mallet.

In this climate, check it regularly. Heat softens the adhesive, and a sheet that has lifted at a corner will peel back and take willow fibres with it. Re-tape or replace as soon as a corner lifts.

Questions

Good to know

Does a face sheet mean I do not need to knock the bat in?

No, and this is the commonest misunderstanding. The sheet protects the surface from abrasion and splitting; knocking in compresses the fibres so the willow can take an impact. A bat with a sheet but no knocking in will still break at the edge.

Should it cover the edges?

No. Leave the edges as bare willow - you need to see what is happening to them, and they need to be worked with a mallet at the start of each season. Sheets over edges hide damage.

How do I apply it?

Clean and dry the face thoroughly, peel the backing, and work from the middle outwards pressing the air out as you go. Trim it to the shape of the blade with a sharp knife or scissors before you start.

When should I replace it?

When it is torn, worn through, or lifting at a corner. In this heat the adhesive softens and corners lift - a lifted corner peels back and takes willow fibres with it, so deal with it as soon as you see it.

Does it affect how the bat plays?

Negligibly. It is a thin film. Some players say it slightly deadens the feel; most cannot tell. The protection it gives is worth far more than any difference in feel.

Can I put one on an old bat?

Yes, and it is a good way to extend the life of a bat whose face has started to show surface damage. Clean the face, work down any lifted fibres with a mallet first, then apply.

Do you deliver in Dar es Salaam?

Yes. We deliver across Dar es Salaam and ship nationwide to Arusha, Mwanza, Dodoma, Zanzibar and beyond. You can also collect from our shop.
