Highlights

Buy nets balls by the box

A net session eats balls. They get lost over fences, driven into thorn hedges and battered soft against a hard surface. Buying one expensive match ball and using it in the nets is how clubs end up with nothing to practise with - practice-grade balls bought in numbers is how it is actually done.

Leather

A real leather ball rather than a synthetic one, so it behaves like a match ball.

Intense Red

Puma-s own colour name for this ball - the traditional daylight colour.

For matches and intensive training

Puma-s own positioning for it.

Practice grade

Priced so a club can buy several rather than nursing one.

Product description

About this product

Puma Cricket Ball Intense – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Dar es Salaam.

This is Puma-s leather cricket ball in the colour they call Intense Red, which Puma describe as being for matches or intensive training sessions.

It is worth being straightforward about grade. At its price this is a practice and training ball rather than a first-class match ball. That is not a criticism – it is the category that actually matters most to a club. A single premium match ball is used for one innings and then retired; a net session with six players and a bowling machine goes through balls constantly, and they are lost, scuffed and beaten soft on a hard surface. Clubs that try to practise with match balls end up not practising.

It is a leather ball, which is the important part. Practice with a synthetic or composite ball and you are learning against something that swings differently, bounces differently and feels different in the hand. Bowlers in particular need to practise with leather if they are going to bowl with it.

Puma do not publish a weight, a piece count or a seam row count for this ball. Under the Laws of Cricket a men-s ball is 155.9 to 163 g with a circumference of 22.4 to 22.9 cm, and adult leather balls are normally made to that.

Look after it the way you would any leather ball: out of the sun, dry, and wiped clean after use. Heat is what hardens a leather ball and finishes its seam early, and it is the main hazard here.

Questions

Good to know

Is it a match ball or a practice ball?

At this price, a practice and training ball. Puma describe it as suitable for matches or intensive training, and for club and school cricket it will do both. A first-class grade match ball costs several times as much.

What does a cricket ball weigh?

Under the Laws of Cricket, a mens ball is 155.9 to 163 g with a circumference of 22.4 to 22.9 cm. A womens ball is 140 to 151 g, and an under-13 junior ball 133 to 144 g. Red balls are used for the longer format, white for limited-overs and floodlit cricket, and pink for day-night matches.

Why practise with leather rather than a cheaper synthetic ball?

Because leather swings, bounces and feels different. A bowler who practises with a synthetic ball and plays with leather is learning the wrong thing. Batters adapt more easily, but bowlers really do need to practise with what they will bowl with.

Why are cricket balls different colours?

Visibility against the background. Red is the traditional ball for the longer format in daylight. White is used for limited-overs and floodlit cricket against coloured clothing. Pink was developed for day-night matches - it stays visible under lights without the white ball-s problem of disappearing against the players and the surroundings.

How do I look after a leather ball?

Keep it dry and out of the sun. Wipe the dirt off after use and store it somewhere cool - heat dries the leather and hardens it, and a ball left in the sun goes hard and loses its seam early. If it gets wet, dry it slowly in the shade.

How many should a club buy?

For a net session with several bowlers, six is a working minimum and a dozen is comfortable. Balls are lost, and stopping to look for them is the fastest way to waste a session.

Can children use a leather ball?

Only with full protective equipment and supervision - helmet, gloves, pads and an abdominal guard. For younger children, a heavy tennis ball or a soft training ball is the sensible way to learn.
