This is a three-tier dumbbell rack holding up to six pairs, in a detachable frame.

A rack is not an accessory, it is the thing that makes a home weight set actually get used. Dumbbells on the floor are in the way. Being in the way, they get moved to a corner; in the corner they are behind something; behind something, they are not used. A rack keeps every weight visible and within reach at roughly hand height, so picking one up takes two seconds.

It also solves a real problem in this climate. Dumbbells left on a floor – especially a concrete or tiled floor that gets mopped – sit in moisture, and the iron underneath any coating starts to go. Up on a rack, with air around them, they stay dry.

Load a rack heaviest at the bottom. This sounds obvious and it is the single mistake people make: put the 10 kg pairs on the top tier and the 2 kg pairs at the bottom and the whole thing becomes top-heavy and unstable, especially on a tiled floor. Heaviest on the bottom tier, lightest on top.

Being detachable matters if you move house or want the room back. A welded rack is a permanent decision; a bolted one comes apart in ten minutes.

Will my dumbbells fit?

It depends on their shape and length - hex dumbbells, round ones and adjustable handles all sit differently. Tell us which dumbbells you have and we will check against the stock before you order.

How should I load it?

Heaviest pairs on the bottom tier, lightest on top. A rack loaded the other way round is top-heavy and can tip, particularly on a smooth tiled floor.

Does it hold adjustable dumbbells?

Adjustable handles with plates on are longer and bulkier than fixed dumbbells and often do not sit properly in a rack designed for fixed ones. Ask us before ordering if that is what you have.

How many dumbbells do I actually need?

Fewer than people think. Three or four pairs covering a sensible spread - say 3, 6, 10 and 15 kg - handles almost all home training. Buying every weight in between mostly fills the rack.

Does it need fixing to the wall?

No, it is free standing. On a smooth tiled floor, check that the feet do not slide and put something grippy underneath if they do.

Does equipment rust in this climate?

Bare iron does, quickly, especially near the coast. Salt in the air plus humidity is the worst combination there is for steel. Wipe sweat off after every session, keep equipment out of direct sun and off a damp floor, and put a light film of oil on any bare metal thread or bar once a month.

I am starting from nothing - what should I buy first?

Something you will actually use three times a week. For most people that is a mat, a pair of light dumbbells and a resistance band, not a heavy set that sits in a corner. Add weight once the habit is established; the equipment is never the reason people stop.
