Product description

About this product

A freestanding three-person double-layer tent on 7001 aluminium X-poles, 3.1 kg, with a silver-coated UPF 50+ fly.

Naturehike sold this series as Cloud Creek before renaming it Cloud River. It sits between a budget dome and an ultralight shelter: proper aluminium poles and a true double-layer build, at a weight and price that make sense for someone camping a few weekends a year rather than thru-hiking.

The frame is a crossed X of 7001 aluminium poles, which makes it freestanding. That matters more than it sounds: you can pitch it on rock, hard-packed ground or a wooden platform where pegs will not go in, then move it once it is up to find level ground. A tent that needs tension from pegs to stand cannot do either.

The fly is 210T polyester with a silver coating rated UPF 50+ and 3000 mm waterproof, which is a higher rating than most tents at this weight. Silver coating does two jobs: it reflects sun so the inside stays cooler through the middle of the day, and it adds to the UV protection. The floor is a tougher 150D Oxford, and the inner is polyester mesh so air moves through on a hot night.

Pitched it is 220 x 180 cm with 125 cm of headroom. Packed it is 52 x 16 x 16 cm at 3.1 kg, and it goes up in under five minutes.

Key Features

  • Freestanding X-cross frame on 7001 aluminium poles, pitches without pegs
  • Double-layer construction: mesh inner with a separate fly
  • 210T silver-coated polyester fly, 3000 mm waterproof, UPF 50+
  • Silver coating reflects sun, so it stays cooler at midday
  • 150D Oxford floor
  • Polyester mesh inner for airflow and insect protection
  • Sleeps 3, 220 x 180 cm with 125 cm headroom
  • 3.1 kg, packs to 52 x 16 x 16 cm, up in under five minutes

Who It Suits

  • Two or three people camping weekends rather than thru-hiking
  • Anyone pitching on hard ground, rock or platforms where pegs will not hold
  • Hot-weather and coastal camping, where the silver coating and mesh inner earn their keep
  • First proper tent after a budget fiberglass dome
  • Trips where the tent is carried a short distance rather than all day

It is a 3-season tent. Freestanding does not mean it can be left unpegged: once the wind gets up, an unpegged tent becomes a kite.

Questions

Good to know

What does freestanding actually get me?

The tent holds its own shape on the poles alone, so you can pitch it on rock, hard-packed ground, sand or a wooden platform where pegs will not hold. You can also lift it once pitched and move it to level ground, or shake it out to clear sand. A tent that needs peg tension to stand can do neither.

Is this the tent that used to be called Cloud Creek?

Yes. Naturehike renamed the series Cloud River; the model code CNK2300ZP024 is unchanged. Same tent, current name.

Does it really sleep three?

Three adults fit shoulder to shoulder on the 220 x 180 cm floor with packs in the vestibule. Two plus gear is the comfortable arrangement, and a single person has room for everything inside.

What does the silver coating do?

Two things. It reflects sunlight rather than absorbing it, so the inside stays noticeably cooler through the middle of the day, and it contributes to the UPF 50+ rating. On the coast and in open camps with no shade, it is the difference between a usable tent at noon and an oven.

Is it light enough to hike with?

At 3.1 kg it is comfortable for a short carry or split between two people, but it is not an ultralight tent. For multi-day trekking where weight decides everything, look at the Mongar UL or Star River UL at around 1.5 kg.

Will it keep the rain out?

3000 mm on the fly is a strong rating for this weight, over a 150D Oxford floor. Pitch off low ground, peg it down and run the guy ropes even though it stands on its own.

How do I look after it?

Dry both layers fully before packing, especially after the coast. Sponge with cool water and mild soap, never machine wash, which strips the silver and PU coatings. Store loose rather than compressed.
