About this product

Mains at home, car socket at the beach, and a double bed full in about two minutes.

The PowerTouch moves 490 litres of air a minute, which is the number that matters on an air bed or a large float. It runs from a normal 220-240V wall socket with the supplied transformer, or from a 12V car socket with the supplied lead, so it works in the house and at Kigamboni without a second pump.

It deflates as well as inflates. Move the nozzle to the other port and it pulls the air back out, which is what turns a bulky air bed back into something that fits in the cupboard.

This is a high-volume, low-pressure pump. It fills big soft things quickly. It is not a paddleboard or kayak pump: maximum pressure is 0.476 PSI, where a paddleboard needs 12 to 15 PSI.

Bestway sets a firm limit on continuous running: five minutes maximum, then at least fifteen minutes to cool before the next run. That is enough for any single air bed, but it means you pause between beds rather than working through four in a row.

Good to know

How fast does it fill an air bed?

At 490 litres a minute a double bed is up in roughly two to three minutes, a single in about half that. The pump is doing volume, not pressure, which is exactly what a bed needs.

Can I use it on a paddleboard or a kayak?

No, and it matters. This pump tops out at 0.476 PSI. A paddleboard needs 12 to 15 PSI, about thirty times more. For those you want the Bestway Air Hammer Sport hand pump instead. Using this one on a SUP will simply never get there.

How long can I run it for?

Five minutes at a stretch, then leave it fifteen minutes to cool. Bestway states this plainly in the manual. One air bed is comfortably inside that; three beds in a row is not, so pause between them. Ignoring it is how these motors burn out.

Will it work on our power here?

Yes. It is rated 220-240V, which matches the Tanzanian supply, and the transformer is in the box. The 12V lead covers you at the beach or on safari, where running the engine while you pump is sensible on a long job.

Will it fit my inflatable?

The three adapters cover the usual valve sizes on air beds, pool floats, rings and camping mats. Worth knowing: not every valve can be emptied by pump. Some one-way and inner safety valves have to be unscrewed and deflated by hand.

Is it loud?

It is a motor-driven blower, so yes, audibly so, in the same range as a hairdryer. It only runs for a couple of minutes at a time.

How do I look after it?

Keep it dry, always. It is not weather-sealed, so it does not get left out in rain or used with wet hands. Keep sand out of both ports, which is the real killer at the coast, and store it somewhere dry. Never use it with a damaged cord.
