Product description

About this product

Set 15 PSI, plug it into the car, and the board is ready in about eight minutes.

This is a proper high-pressure pump, not a blower. It reaches 20 PSI, which covers every inflatable paddleboard and kayak on the market with margin to spare, and it holds the pressure you set to within a tenth of a PSI.

You choose the unit, preset the pressure on the digital screen, and press start. It runs, monitors, and shuts itself off at the number. There is no gauge to read, no guessing, and no way to go past the pressure your board is rated for because you were distracted.

It deflates as well, which is the half people forget. Moving the hose to the outlet port pulls the air back out and gets a board flat enough to roll properly, rather than wrestling it into the bag half full.

Power comes from a 12V car socket on a 2.8 metre lead, so it reaches from the car to wherever the board is lying. A built-in fan cools the motor, which is what lets it run continuously rather than in short bursts.

There is also an LED on the body with three modes: steady light, strobe, and an SOS pattern.

Key Features

  • Maximum 20 PSI, accurate to within 0.1 PSI
  • Digital display with preset pressure and automatic shut-off
  • Inflates and deflates through two ports
  • Six valve adapters plus a 1 metre flexible hose
  • 12V car power on a 2.8 metre lead
  • Built-in cooling fan for continuous running
  • LED light with steady, strobe and SOS modes
  • About 8 minutes for a standard paddleboard

Who It Suits

  • Paddleboard owners, especially anyone inflating more than one board a day
  • Inflatable kayak, dinghy and small boat owners
  • Anyone who has decided hand-pumping is over
  • Beach, lake and river trips where the car is within a few metres

Set it to the pressure printed on your board and no higher. Most boards run 12 to 15 PSI. Going past the rated pressure damages the drop-stitch core inside, and that damage cannot be repaired.

Questions

Good to know

How is this different from the Bestway PowerTouch pump?

Different jobs entirely. The PowerTouch is a high-volume blower that tops out below half a PSI, for air beds and floats. This one reaches 20 PSI, which is what a paddleboard needs. Neither does the other job well, and this is the one you want for a board.

What pressure should I set it to?

Whatever is printed on your board, usually near the valve, and never higher. Most inflatable boards run 12 to 15 PSI. Going past the rated figure does not make the board usefully stiffer, it stresses the drop-stitch core inside, and that damage cannot be repaired.

How long does a board take?

Around eight minutes for a standard paddleboard. The pump moves 50 litres a minute at pressure, which is deliberate: high pressure and high volume trade against each other, and the last few PSI are the slow part on any pump.

Does it run off mains power?

No. It is a 12V DC pump with a cigarette lighter connector on a 2.8 metre lead. Run it at the car. For a long session, leave the engine running so you are not flattening the battery.

Will it fit my board valve?

Yes. Six adapters come in the box, including the Halkey-Roberts valve fitted to essentially every inflatable paddleboard and kayak, plus fittings for tents, air beds, pools and sports balls.

Can it deflate as well?

Yes, and it is worth using. Move the hose to the deflation port and it draws the air out. A board that has been vacuum-deflated rolls to the size it was when it came out of the bag new, which makes the difference between the bag closing and not.

Is it noisy?

Under 80 dB from a metre and a half away, so comparable to a vacuum cleaner. It runs for eight minutes, not all afternoon.

How do I look after it at the coast?

Sand in the intake is what kills these pumps, so never set it down on wet sand while it is running. Put it on the board bag or a towel. Wipe salt off the body afterwards, let the hose dry before coiling it, and store it out of direct sun.
