Will compression help me beat the baggage weight limit?
No. This is the single most common misunderstanding about compression cubes and it is worth being blunt: squeezing the air out reduces volume, not mass. Your clothes weigh exactly the same compressed. Compression buys you space in the case, which lets you take more - and taking more is how people end up over the limit, not under it. Weigh the bag before you leave for the airport.
What is the actual benefit if it does not save weight?
You stop unpacking your whole case to find one shirt. That is it, and it is enough. Everything has a home, a security check does not turn your bag into chaos, and you can lift one cube out at a hotel and put it in a drawer. On a multi-stop trip - Dar, then Zanzibar, then Arusha - it is the difference between living out of a case and repacking it three times.
Can I store clothes compressed in this climate?
Not for long, and this matters more in Dar es Salaam than almost anywhere. Compression traps whatever humidity was in the fabric when you sealed it, with no airflow to carry it away. Clothes packed slightly damp and compressed for a week will come out smelling, and given long enough they will grow mould. Pack bone dry, and unpack at the other end rather than leaving things sealed.
Why do some cubes have mesh panels?
Two reasons. You can see what is in a cube without opening it, which is the whole point of packing cubes. And mesh lets air move through, so clothes that were not perfectly dry stand a chance. Solid-panel cubes look tidier and breathe worse.
Do the zips last?
The zip is where a packing cube fails, because compression cubes are asked to hold fabric under tension every time. Do not force a zip closed over an overstuffed cube - that is what splits the tape away from the fabric. If it does not close with firm steady pressure, take something out.
Are they useful on upcountry trips?
Very. Fine red dust gets into everything on murram roads, and a zipped cube inside a case keeps clean clothes genuinely clean. The same applies on a boat to Zanzibar, where salt spray finds its way into an open bag.
Can I wash them?
Hand wash in cool water with mild soap and air dry them fully. Machine washing is hard on the zips and the mesh. Wash them when they need it - a cube that has carried worn clothes home from a week away is not clean just because it looks it.
