Highlights

No board, no scorching

Steam relaxes the fibres and the crease falls out under the garment's own weight. Nothing presses against the fabric, so prints, pleats and delicate materials that an iron would flatten or scorch come out fine.

Works on hanging clothes

No ironing board, no surface, no setup.

Safe on delicates

Nothing touches the fabric, so prints and pleats survive.

Faster than ironing

A shirt in a couple of minutes rather than ten.

Product description

About this product

Steamer Cleaning Vertical Smoother – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Tanzania.

A steamer works differently from an iron and the difference matters. Steam penetrates the fabric and relaxes the fibres; the crease then falls out under the weight of the garment itself. Nothing is pressed against the cloth at all.
That is why a steamer is the right tool for anything an iron would damage. Printed shirts, pleated skirts, silk, anything with beading or embroidery – all of it survives steaming and none of it survives a hot soleplate. It also refreshes a garment that has been packed in a case for a week, which ironing does not.
It is faster for the common case. A shirt that would take ten minutes on a board takes a couple of minutes hanging on a door, and there is no board to find, set up and put away.
What it will not do is give you a sharp crease. If you want a knife-edge on a trouser leg or a crisp collar, you want an iron. Many people carry both, and they are not really competitors.
Please read the voltage note before ordering. We have not yet had the rating plate on this unit confirmed in writing by the supplier, and we are not prepared to guess it on a mains heating appliance. Tanzania is nominally 230 V, 50 Hz. Ask us and we will read the plate on the actual stock.

Questions

Good to know

Do you deliver in Dar es Salaam?

Yes. We deliver across Dar es Salaam and ship countrywide to Arusha, Mwanza, Dodoma, Mbeya, Zanzibar and the rest of Tanzania.

Steamer or iron - which do I want?

A steamer relaxes creases by putting moisture into the fabric while it hangs. An iron presses them out under heat and weight. A steamer is faster, needs no board, and is far safer on delicate fabrics and anything with a print or a pleat. An iron gives you a sharp crease and a properly flat finish. For travel a steamer usually wins; for a formal shirt collar, an iron does.

Will it run on Tanzanian mains?

Tanzania is nominally 230 V, 50 Hz, and the standard tolerance runs from about 207 V up to 253 V. Before we publish a voltage figure for this unit we want the rating plate confirmed in writing by the supplier - we are not going to guess it on a mains heating appliance. Ask us before you order and we will read the plate on the stock and tell you exactly what it says.

Can I use tap water in it?

Dar es Salaam water is hard enough that scale builds up in a steam appliance, and scale is what eventually blocks the outlets and shortens the life. Use filtered or distilled water where you can, empty the tank after every use rather than leaving water standing in it, and descale if the manufacturer provides a procedure.

What should I look for on the rating plate?

Three markings. 100-240V or 220-240V means it works here on a plug adapter alone. 120V or 110-127V means it will NOT work here and needs a proper step-down transformer - a plug adapter will not save it. And a unit with a manual 110/220 slide switch works only if the switch is set correctly, so check it before every use.

What happens if I plug a 110 V appliance into Tanzanian mains?

Nothing good, and it is a fire risk rather than simply a breakage. A heating element is a fixed resistance, so doubling the voltage roughly quadruples the power it tries to dissipate. The element runs far above its design temperature within seconds, insulation chars and nearby plastics can ignite. The current drawn is still below the breaker rating, so nothing upstream trips - there is no protection to save you.

Is a plug adapter the same as a converter?

No, and the confusion causes real damage. A plug adapter changes the shape of the pins and nothing else - the British Standard for travel adaptors actually requires the words This adaptor does not convert voltage to be printed on the product. If the appliance is rated for 230 V you need only an adapter. If it is not, an adapter will destroy it.

What safety approvals does it carry?

We are asking the supplier for IEC 60335 test documentation - that is the international safety standard series for household appliances, with specific parts for irons, for appliances that heat liquids and for fabric steamers. A CE mark on its own is not evidence of testing, because for this class of product CE is a manufacturer self-declaration rather than an independent assessment. We will publish whatever documentation we receive.
