Flights are the fastest-wearing part of a dart and the reason is geometry rather than quality. When you throw well, the second and third darts arrive next to the first, and an incoming point striking the trailing edge of a flight splits it. Tight grouping destroys flights. It is the only component where playing better costs you more.

A split or creased flight does not fly straight, and a dart with a damaged flight will land differently from the two that preceded it – which is worse than useless, because you will adjust your throw to compensate for a fault that is not in your action.

The standard shape is the general-purpose default: the most surface area, the most drag, and the most stabilising effect, which suits most throws. Slimmer shapes reduce drag and suit a faster, flatter throw, and they group more tightly because they take up less room in the treble bed.

Flights are not threaded, so any standard-shape flight fits any standard-shape shaft regardless of whether your darts are 2BA or 1/4 inch.

Why do I need ninety flights?

Because they are consumables and they go faster the better you play. An incoming dart striking the trailing edge of a flight splits it, so tight grouping destroys flights. Thirty sets means you simply stop thinking about it.

When should I replace a flight?

As soon as it is split, creased or has lost its shape. A damaged flight flies differently from an undamaged one, and you will unconsciously adjust your throw to compensate for a fault that is not in your action - which is how a good throw gets broken.

Standard or slim shape?

Standard is the general-purpose default: more surface area, more drag, more stability, which suits most throws. Slim reduces drag, suits a faster flatter throw, and groups more tightly because it takes less room in the treble bed. Try both - they cost very little.

What is 2BA, and will these parts fit my darts?

2BA is the standard dart thread - 4.7 mm major diameter - and virtually every modern barrel, shaft and point uses it. The older alternative is a 1/4 inch thread, noticeably fatter and coarser, found on some cheap brass and house darts. They are not interchangeable and forcing one into the other strips the thread. Flights are not threaded at all, so any standard-shape flight fits any standard-shape shaft.

How do I stop them getting damaged so fast?

Flight protectors clip over the trailing edge and deflect incoming points. They are worth having once you are grouping well. Beyond that, it is simply the price of throwing accurately.

Do flights affect how the dart flies?

Substantially. The flight is what stabilises the dart and pulls the tail into line. More flight area means more drag and a more arcing, more stable flight; less area means a flatter, faster one. Along with shaft length, it is the main way players tune a set.

How do I set the board up correctly?

The bullseye goes 1.73 m from the floor, and the throwing line sits 2.37 m horizontally from the face of the board - measured to the board face, not the wall, because a board with a surround stands proud of it. Cross-check with the diagonal: 2.93 m from the centre of the bull to the back of the oche. If the diagonal does not match, one of your other two measurements is wrong.
