Product description

About this product

The Ti.S6 is the best-selling racket HEAD have ever made and one of the longest-running models in tennis, and it is worth understanding why rather than just noting it.

Everything about it is arranged to produce power for the player. A 115 square inch head is super-oversize, giving the biggest sweet spot available and, more importantly, the smallest penalty for missing it. 252 g strung is very light. The balance is 8 points head-heavy, so what mass there is sits where the ball is struck. And at 27.75 inches it is extended, adding leverage on top of all that.

For the player it is built for, that combination is transformative: seniors and older players, petite or lower-strength players, anyone returning to tennis, social doubles players, and anyone whose strokes are short and compact. The racket supplies the pace.

For anyone else it is the wrong frame. A developing junior with a full swing, or any intermediate player, will find it hard to control and harsh to hit with, because it is very stiff – HEAD rate the flex at 76 – as well as very light.

That stiffness carries one piece of practical advice. Stiff and light is the classic tennis elbow risk profile, so string it with a soft nylon rather than a polyester – our Yonex DYNAWIRE is the obvious pairing – and at the lower end of the 57 to 66 lb range. It ships pre-strung with HEAD synthetic gut at around 59 lb, which is a sensible starting point.

Titanium and graphite composite, 16 by 19, grip sizes L1 to L5. No cover included.

Questions

Good to know

What does head size change?

How much the racket helps you against how much control you have. A bigger head means more power and a bigger sweet spot that punishes mishits less - which is why beginners should start oversize. A smaller head means more control and more feedback, which is what a player with a full swing needs to keep the ball in. Under 100 square inches is control; 105 to 110 is forgiving; above 110 is maximum help.

Who is this racket really for?

Players who need free power: seniors and older players, petite or lower-strength players, anyone coming back after years off, social doubles players, and anyone with short compact strokes. It is not a developing junior's racket and not an intermediate's.

Why does the string choice matter so much on this frame?

Because stiff and light is the classic tennis elbow risk profile, and the Ti.S6 is both - HEAD rate the flex at 76. String it with a soft nylon such as DYNAWIRE rather than a polyester, and at the lower end of the recommended range.

What does extended length do?

At 27.75 inches it is three quarters of an inch longer than standard, adding leverage and therefore power and reach. On this frame it compounds with the head-heavy balance and the huge head - all three do the same job.

When do strings need replacing?

Long before they break. Strings lose tension and elasticity from the day they go in - the stringbed goes dead while looking perfect. The old rule still holds: restring as many times a year as you play per week. Twice a week, twice a year. At minimum once a year regardless, and sooner here, because heat accelerates tension loss badly.

What does string gauge mean?

How thick the string is. It is quoted in millimetres and in a US gauge number where higher means thinner - 1.20 mm is 17 gauge, 1.30 mm is 16. Thinner bites the ball more for extra spin and feel, and breaks sooner. Thicker lasts considerably longer and feels firmer and more controlled, with less spin. 1.25 mm is the sensible middle.

How does the climate here affect equipment?

Heat is hard on strings - polyester loses tension fastest of all string types and heat accelerates it sharply, so expect to restring more often than a European schedule suggests. Never leave a racket in a car boot. Humidity is hard on grips and on natural gut, which absorbs moisture and softens. And pressurised balls go dead faster in heat, opened or not.
