Highlights

Sold one at a time for a reason

Stumps break individually. A yorker splits one, a fielder-s throw snaps another, and the rest of the set is perfectly good. Being able to buy a single stump is what keeps a club from replacing six every time one goes.

Close to full size - just under the 28 in regulation. Regulation height is 28 in.

Sold singly

Replace the broken one rather than the whole set.

Grooved top

Cut to take a standard bail.

Product description

About this product

This is a single white cricket stump, 27 in (68.6 cm) tall.

Under the Laws of Cricket, the tops of the stumps stand 28 inches – 71.12 cm – above the playing surface, and a set of three spans 9 inches. This one is 27 in, which makes it close to full size – just under the 28 in regulation. Junior dimensions are deliberately left to national governing bodies rather than fixed in the Laws, which is why shorter practice and junior stumps are made in several sizes.

Selling them singly is the practical part. Stumps do not fail as a set – one gets split by a yorker, one gets snapped by a throw from the deep, and the other five are fine. A club that can only buy sets of three ends up either replacing everything or playing with a mismatched wicket.

White is the standard colour and it is functional: it shows against a green outfield and, more importantly, it is visible to the umpire at the far end of the pitch for run-out and stumping decisions.

The top is grooved to take a standard bail. If you are mixing stumps from different sets, check that the grooves are at the same height – a stump slightly taller or shorter than its neighbours makes the bails sit crooked, and a crooked bail either will not fall or falls on its own.

Store them dry. Wooden stumps left in a damp bag swell and the grooves change shape.

Questions

Good to know

What is the regulation stump height?

Under the Laws of Cricket the tops of the stumps stand 28 in (71.12 cm) above the playing surface, and a set of three is 9 in (22.86 cm) wide overall. Junior dimensions are left to national governing bodies rather than fixed in the Laws, which is why shorter practice and junior stumps exist in several sizes.

Is 27 in a full-size stump?

Close - regulation is 28 in, so this is just under. It is a practical practice and club size; for a formal match check what your competition requires.

Why buy stumps singly?

Because they break singly. A yorker splits one, a throw from the deep snaps another, and the rest are fine. Buying one at a time is far cheaper than replacing a set.

Can I mix it with stumps from another set?

Check the groove heights match. A stump slightly taller or shorter than its neighbours makes the bails sit crooked, and a crooked bail either will not fall when it should or falls on its own when it should not.

How many stumps do I need?

Six for a full wicket at both ends, plus spares. A club that plays regularly should keep at least two spare stumps in the bag.

How should I store them?

Dry, and not in a damp kit bag. Wooden stumps swell with moisture, the grooves change shape, and bails stop sitting properly.
