Highlights

Arm.tec is a face, not a gimmick

A tape face laminated onto the blade takes the first impact and spreads it, which is what stops a Kashmir blade splitting at the edge. On a junior bat that will be used hard by someone who does not yet middle the ball consistently, it is genuinely useful.

Grade 3 unbleached Kashmir willow

Unbleached willow keeps more of its natural fibre strength than bleached.

Half Arm.tec face

A protective tape laminate over the upper blade, spreading impact and resisting edge damage.

35-36 mm edges

Substantial edges for a junior bat, widening the usable middle.

Size 5, 950-1030 g

Kookaburra-s own published weight range for this size.

Product description

About this product

Cricket Bat – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Dar es Salaam.

This is Kookaburra-s Shadow Pro 8.1 in size 5 – a Grade 3 unbleached Kashmir willow bat from the Kookaburra India range.

A word about the model name, because our listing carried it wrongly. Kookaburra have no Shadow Pro 8.3; the Kashmir willow Shadow is the Pro 8.1, and its published specification matches this bat exactly. Kookaburra-s numbering runs from the flagship downwards – the integer before the decimal is the tier, so 1.x and 2.x are top English willow and 8.x is the Kashmir willow level – and the digit after the decimal is a season version rather than a quality step.

Arm.tec is Kookaburra-s protective face laminate, applied here to the upper half of the blade. It takes the first impact and spreads it across a wider area, which is what protects a Kashmir blade from splitting at the edge. On a junior bat used by a player who does not yet find the middle every time, it earns its place.

Unbleached Kashmir willow is worth noting. Bleaching whitens a blade cosmetically at some cost to the fibre; unbleached willow looks less uniform and holds together better.

Size 5 is a bat of about 30 inches overall, for a player roughly 4ft11 to 5ft2 – around 10 or 11 years old. Kookaburra publish the weight range for this size as 950 to 1030 g, which is one of the few junior bats where a manufacturer states it.

Knock it in before it faces a hard new ball. Kashmir needs less than English willow, but the toe and edges still need a few hours with a mallet.

Buying a Cricket Bat in Dar es Salaam

361 Degrees Adventure keeps the cricket bat at our showroom in Upanga, Dar es Salaam, with delivery countrywide across Tanzania. Come and handle it before you buy, or order online and collect.

Every cricket bat is checked in store before it leaves us, and our staff use the same kit in the field, so you get an honest answer on fit and sizing rather than a sales pitch.

Not sure which cricket bat suits you? Call or message the showroom and we will talk you through the options that are actually in stock in Tanzania.

Spare parts and replacements for the cricket bat are easier to get here than on an overseas order, which matters once the gear is in use.

Questions

Good to know

Why does the title say 8.1 when I ordered an 8.3?

Because Kookaburra do not make a Shadow Pro 8.3 - the name appears only on marketplace listings. The Kashmir willow Shadow is the Pro 8.1 and its published specification matches this bat exactly. We have corrected the name rather than repeat one that does not exist.

What do Kookaburra-s numbers mean?

The integer is the tier and it descends in quality as the number rises: 1.x and 2.x are top-grade English willow, the middle numbers step down through the English willow grades, and 8.x and 9.x are the Kashmir willow levels. The digit after the decimal is a season version, not a quality step.

What is Arm.tec?

A protective tape laminate bonded to the face of the blade. It takes the first impact and spreads it over a wider area, which protects the willow underneath from splitting - particularly useful on a junior bat.

What bat size do I need?

By height rather than age: size 4 for 4ft9-4ft11, size 5 for 4ft11-5ft2, size 6 for 5ft2-5ft5, Harrow for 5ft5-5ft7, Short Handle for 5ft7-6ft, Long Handle above 6ft. Short Handle is the standard adult size. A bat that is too long is worse than one slightly short - it drags the hands away from the body and ruins the stroke.

English or Kashmir willow - which should I buy?

English willow (Salix alba caerulea) is softer, lighter and more fibrous, so it compresses and springs back - that is where a bat gets its rebound. Kashmir willow is denser and harder: it costs a fraction as much, needs less preparation and lasts well, but it never hits the ball as far. For a hard leather ball at club level, English willow. For tennis-ball cricket, school use or a first bat, Kashmir.

Do I need to knock it in?

Yes, though less than an English willow bat. A few hours with a mallet on the edges and toe, then a spell against old soft balls, before it faces a hard new one.

How do I look after a bat in this climate?

Keep it out of direct sun and out of a hot car - heat dries willow and opens cracks. Keep it off a damp floor. Store it upright in a bat cover, not leaning under weight. Check the toe after every session, and re-tape the anti-scuff sheet as soon as it lifts. Humidity and heat here are harder on a bat than the ball is.

Do you deliver in Dar es Salaam?

Yes. We deliver across Dar es Salaam and ship nationwide to Arusha, Mwanza, Dodoma, Zanzibar and beyond. You can also collect from our shop.
