Highlights

Wood taken out of the middle, put back at the edges

A scoop bat has a channel cut down the back of the blade. Removing mass from the centre and leaving it at the edges gives a wider effective sweet spot for the same total weight - the design Gray-Nicolls made famous in the 1970s and that still works.

Scoop back

A channel cut into the back of the blade, moving mass out to the edges where it widens the middle.

Kashmir willow

Dense and durable. Less preparation needed than English willow and far cheaper.

Same weight, wider middle

The point of a scoop is more forgiving hitting area without extra pick-up weight.

Club and school use

A practical bat for hard-ball club cricket, nets and school teams.

About this product

Scs Scoop Cricket Bat – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Tanzania.

This is a scoop-back Kashmir willow bat – a design in which willow is hollowed from the back of the blade.

The idea goes back to the 1970s and it is sound engineering rather than styling. A bat has a weight the batsman can swing, and within that weight the maker decides where to put the wood. Take a channel out of the centre of the back – where it contributes least – and the remaining mass concentrates along the edges and the spine. The result is a wider effective sweet spot for the same pick-up weight, so a shot struck slightly off centre still carries.

It also gives a distinctive feel. A scoop bat tends to pick up light for its mass, because the weight is distributed outwards rather than concentrated.

Kashmir willow is the right timber at this price. It is denser and harder than English willow, so it returns less energy to the ball, but it is far tougher, needs much less knocking in, tolerates heat and damp better and costs a fraction as much. For school cricket, nets, club second teams and anyone whose bat is going to live in a hot car, that is the sensible trade.

Knock it in before it faces a hard new ball – a few hours with a mallet, edges and toe hardest. Against a tennis ball or a taped ball, use it straight away.

Questions

Good to know

What is a scoop bat and does it work?

A bat with a channel cut into the back of the blade. Removing wood from the centre and leaving it at the edges widens the effective sweet spot for the same total weight. It is genuine design rather than styling, and it has been in production since the 1970s.

Does the scoop make it weaker?

Not meaningfully. The wood removed is from the area that contributes least to the blade-s stiffness. The edges and spine, which do the work, are left intact - and in fact carry more mass than they would on a conventional bat of the same weight.

English or Kashmir willow - which should I buy?

English willow (Salix alba caerulea) is softer, lighter and more fibrous, so it compresses and springs back - that is where a bat gets its rebound. Kashmir willow is denser and harder: it costs a fraction as much, needs less preparation and lasts well, but it never hits the ball as far. For a hard leather ball at club level, English willow. For tennis-ball cricket, school use or a first bat, Kashmir.

Do I need to knock it in?

For hard-ball cricket, yes - a few hours with a mallet on the edges and toe. Kashmir needs far less than English willow. For tennis-ball or taped-ball cricket you can use it immediately.

What bat size do I need?

By height rather than age: size 4 for 4ft9-4ft11, size 5 for 4ft11-5ft2, size 6 for 5ft2-5ft5, Harrow for 5ft5-5ft7, Short Handle for 5ft7-6ft, Long Handle above 6ft. Short Handle is the standard adult size. A bat that is too long is worse than one slightly short - it drags the hands away from the body and ruins the stroke.

Should I oil the bat?

A little raw linseed oil on the face, edges and back - never on the splice, the labels or the toe end grain - once before knocking in and once or twice a season after. A teaspoon spread thin, not a soaking. Over-oiling deadens the willow permanently, and it is far commoner than under-oiling.

How do I look after a bat in this climate?

Keep it out of direct sun and out of a hot car - heat dries willow and opens cracks. Keep it off a damp floor. Store it upright in a bat cover, not leaning under weight. Check the toe after every session, and re-tape the anti-scuff sheet as soon as it lifts. Humidity and heat here are harder on a bat than the ball is.
