Highlights

A real English willow bat in a junior size

Most junior bats are Kashmir willow, because English willow in a small size costs almost as much as an adult one. Putting a young player on English willow early is what lets them feel the difference between a shot middled and a shot not - which is how technique gets built.

Grade 3 English willow

SG-s own published grade - a genuine English willow blade rather than Kashmir.

Well-distributed sweet spot

SG-s traditional profile, spreading the middle rather than concentrating it in one small area.

Shock-absorbing handle

Cane handle with rubber insertions between the splits, which takes the sting out of a mis-hit.

Short Handle

For players from about 5ft7 upwards.

Product description

About this product

The SG Hiscore Xtreme is a Grade 3 English willow bat with SG-s traditional profile, supplied here in Short Handle.

English willow is what makes this bat worth its price. Salix alba caerulea is soft, light and fibrous – it compresses when the ball hits it and springs back, and that rebound is where carry comes from. Kashmir willow is harder and denser and absorbs the impact instead. A Kashmir bat is a perfectly usable thing; an English willow one hits the ball further, and a player feels the difference immediately.

The profile is SG-s traditional shape, with the mass spread to give a wide sweet spot rather than a narrow, very lively one. For a developing player that is the right compromise – the middle is more forgiving, which matters far more than the last few metres of carry.

Knocking in is not optional. The bat is hard pressed at the factory, which begins binding the fibres, but that is the start rather than the finish. Six to eight hours with a mallet over a fortnight, concentrating on the edges and the toe, and then a spell against old soft balls before a new one. A bat taken out of the wrapper and straight into a match cracks at the edge, and no manufacturer replaces one for that.

The handle is cane with rubber insertions between the splits, which is what stops a mis-hit jarring the hands.

Questions

Good to know

What bat size do I need?

By height rather than age: size 4 for 4ft9-4ft11, size 5 for 4ft11-5ft2, size 6 for 5ft2-5ft5, Harrow for 5ft5-5ft7, Short Handle for 5ft7-6ft, Long Handle above 6ft. Short Handle is the standard adult size. A bat that is too long is worse than one slightly short - it drags the hands away from the body and ruins the stroke.

English or Kashmir willow - which should I buy?

English willow (Salix alba caerulea) is softer, lighter and more fibrous, so it compresses and springs back - that is where a bat gets its rebound. Kashmir willow is denser and harder: it costs a fraction as much, needs less preparation and lasts well, but it never hits the ball as far. For a hard leather ball at club level, English willow. For tennis-ball cricket, school use or a first bat, Kashmir.

Does the bat need knocking in?

Yes, and it is not optional on a willow bat. Knocking in compresses and binds the fibres at the edges and the toe so they can take a hard ball without breaking. Allow six to eight hours with a mallet spread over a couple of weeks, working the edges and toe hardest, then use it against old soft balls before new ones. A bat that goes straight into a match unknocked will crack, and no bat is replaced for that.

What does the willow grade mean?

It is a cosmetic and structural grading of the cleft the blade was cut from - straighter and more numerous grains, fewer knots and less colour variation score better. It is a real guide to quality, but SG re-graded their whole range for 2026, so grade numbers on older listings are not comparable, and retailer-quoted grades often contradict the manufacturer. We publish SG-s own figure.

Why is no bat weight listed?

Because SG do not publish one for this model, and we will not repeat the figures retailers invent. Willow is a natural material and weight varies cleft to cleft. Tell us the weight you want and we will weigh what is in stock before it ships.

Should I oil the bat?

A little raw linseed oil on the face, edges and back - never on the splice, the labels or the toe end grain - once before knocking in and once or twice a season after. A teaspoon spread thin, not a soaking. Over-oiling deadens the willow permanently, and it is far commoner than under-oiling.

How do I look after a bat in this climate?

Keep it out of direct sun and out of a hot car - heat dries willow and opens cracks. Keep it off a damp floor. Store it upright in a bat cover, not leaning under weight. Check the toe after every session, and re-tape the anti-scuff sheet as soon as it lifts. Humidity and heat here are harder on a bat than the ball is.
