Highlights

The strap runs the whole way through

On a proper rescue tube the nylon tow strap does not attach to the ends of the foam - it runs right through the inside of the tube from clip to clip. That means the load of towing a panicking adult is carried by the webbing, not by the foam, which is what stops it tearing apart mid-rescue.

Closed-cell foam

Does not absorb water, so it floats the same in the fortieth minute of a shift as the first.

Triple hand-dipped vinyl

A thick skin that survives sun, chlorine, salt and being dragged across concrete.

Full-length nylon tow strap

Runs through the whole tube, so the towing load goes through the webbing rather than the foam.

Adjustable shoulder line

Carried across the body so a guard can run, scan and swim without holding it.

Product description

About this product

A rescue tube is the tool a lifeguard swims with. The guard enters the water with the tube trailing on its shoulder line, reaches the casualty, pushes the tube to them or wraps it around them, clips it, and tows them in. It gives the casualty something to hold that is not the rescuer – which is what keeps a panicking swimmer from climbing onto the person trying to help them, the way drownings of rescuers usually happen.

Construction is what separates a real rescue tube from a pool toy in the same shape. The foam is closed-cell, so it does not absorb water and does not lose buoyancy across a long shift. The vinyl skin is hand-dipped in several coats, thick enough to take sun, chlorine, salt and constant dragging across concrete. And the nylon tow strap runs through the entire length of the tube rather than being fixed to the ends of the foam, so the load of towing an adult is carried by the webbing.

The shoulder line is the other detail that matters. It lets a guard wear the tube across the body while walking the deck, scanning, and running – and then swim with it trailing behind rather than held in a hand. A rescue tube that has to be carried is one that gets put down.

This belongs at any pool with a guard on duty, at swimming schools, at hotel and resort pools, and at supervised beaches. It is equipment for trained personnel: a tube does not make anyone a lifeguard, and the training in how to approach a panicking casualty is what actually makes a rescue safe. Look after it the way you would any safety equipment – rinse it, keep it out of long sun, and check the strap, the clip and the skin at the start of each season.

Questions

Good to know

How is a rescue tube used?

The guard swims out with the tube trailing on its shoulder line, gives it to the casualty to hold or wraps and clips it around them, then swims in towing the tube. The casualty holds the tube rather than the rescuer, which is the whole point.

Why not just swim out and grab someone?

Because a panicking person in the water will climb onto whoever reaches them and push them under. Drownings of rescuers happen this way. The tube gives the casualty something else to hold onto and keeps the rescuer out of their reach.

Is a rescue tube the same as a rescue can?

No. A can is a rigid moulded float, usual on surf beaches. A tube is flexible and can be wrapped around a casualty and clipped, which is better for an unconscious or unresponsive person and standard for pools. Many facilities carry both.

Does buying one make me a lifeguard?

No. It is equipment for trained personnel. The training - how to approach a panicking casualty, how to release a grab, how to tow and land someone - is what makes a rescue work. Get the training first.

Why does the tow strap run through the tube?

Because towing an adult puts a serious load on it. A strap fixed only to the ends of the foam tears the foam out. A strap running through the whole length carries the load through the webbing itself.

How do I look after it?

Rinse in fresh water after every shift, especially after salt, and dry in the shade. Check the strap, the stitching and the clip each season, and look for splits in the vinyl - water inside a split skin will eventually waterlog and rot the foam.

Can I use it at a beach?

Yes. Tubes are used at both pools and beaches. In surf, many guards prefer a rigid rescue can because it handles waves better, but a tube is the more versatile tool overall.

Do you deliver in Dar es Salaam?

Yes. We deliver across Dar es Salaam and ship nationwide to Arusha, Mwanza, Dodoma, Zanzibar and beyond. You can also collect from our shop.
