Highlights

The reef is what these are really for

Sea urchins, fire coral, broken shell and rock that is razor-sharp under a centimetre of water - the shallows around here punish bare feet. Water shoes turn getting in and out of the water from something you pick your way through into something you just walk.

4-way stretch knit upper

Pulls on like a sock, moves with the foot, no laces to work loose in the water.

Integrated drainage

Ports in the sole push water out as you walk, so they drain instead of squelching.

Seamless construction

No stitched seams inside to rub a wet foot raw over a long day.

Grip on wet rock

A sole built for the surface that beach sandals slide on.

Product description

About this product

Water shoes solve a specific and very local problem. The shallows along this coast, and every reef flat around the islands, are full of things that hurt: sea urchins, fire coral, broken shell, and rock edges that are invisible under a few centimetres of water. Add sand hot enough to run across at midday and a boat ladder covered in barnacles, and bare feet stop being an option.

The upper is a four-way stretch hydro knit, which means they pull on like a sock and move with the foot. There are no laces to come undone in the water, no buckles to catch, and no stitched seams inside to rub a wet foot raw – wet skin blisters far faster than dry skin, which is why a seamless construction matters more here than in a normal shoe.

The drainage system in the sole is the other half. A closed-soled shoe fills with water and stays full, so you walk with a kilo of water on each foot. Ported drainage lets each step push water out, and the knit upper then dries in minutes rather than hours.

Grip is the underrated part. Wet rock, a slime-covered boat ramp and a wet fibreglass deck are all surfaces that ordinary beach sandals slide on. A proper water shoe sole holds, which matters more for avoiding a broken wrist than for anything else these shoes do.

They are useful well beyond the beach: kayaking, boat work, river crossings on a trek, the gym pool, and the shower block at a campsite.

Questions

Good to know

Will they protect me from sea urchins?

They protect against a great deal - broken shell, coral edges, rock and hot sand - but a long urchin spine can still go through a flexible sole if you stand directly on one. Watch where you put your feet on a reef flat regardless; nothing short of a rigid sole stops an urchin properly.

How should they fit?

Snug, like a sock, with your toes just short of the end. Loose water shoes fill with sand and slide on the foot, which blisters. The stretch upper means they should feel firm when you pull them on.

Can I wear them with socks?

You can, and some people prefer thin quick-dry socks for a full day on a boat to stop any rubbing. Cotton socks are a bad idea - they stay wet and cause exactly the blisters you were avoiding.

Will they smell?

Only if you put them away wet. Rinse the salt and sand out after every use and let them dry properly in the shade. Salt and damp left in the knit is what makes any water shoe start to smell.

Are they good for walking any distance?

For beach walking, reef flats, boats and river crossings, yes. They are not hiking shoes - the sole is flexible and thin, so a long walk on rough ground will be uncomfortable and will wear them out.

Can children wear them?

Yes, in the right size, and around coral and urchins they are arguably more important for children than adults. Check the fit is snug so they do not come off in the water.

Do they float away if they come off?

They can, and this is worth knowing on a boat. Take them off inside the boat rather than over the side, and keep them together in a bag when you are not wearing them.

Do you deliver in Dar es Salaam?

Yes. We deliver across Dar es Salaam and ship nationwide to Arusha, Mwanza, Dodoma, Zanzibar and beyond. You can also collect from our shop.
