About this product

The weight you need changes through a session. The tide picks up, you drift into deeper water, the wind turns and your line starts to belly. On a conventional jig head the only way to respond is to cut the line and tie another knot – which people avoid doing, and end up fishing the wrong weight for an hour.

A quick-release head solves that. The fitting lets you take the head off and put another on without touching the knot, so changing weight becomes a ten-second job instead of a two-minute one. Over a day that is the difference between fishing the right weight all the time and fishing the wrong one most of the time.

It is a jig head format, so it takes a soft plastic directly – one fitting gives you both weight and hook – and it carries a red painted lead finish.

Fish it as any jig head: drop or cast, let it reach the depth you want, then work it with lifts and drops of the rod tip. Most takes come on the fall.

Is this a Mustad product?

No. Mustad make no lead weights - their entire range is tungsten TitanX, and their quick-release fitting is the Fastach clip on tungsten football weights. A red lead quick-release head is from another manufacturer or a distributor own label. We would rather say so.

Why does a quick-release fitting matter?

Because the right weight changes as the tide and wind change, and nobody wants to cut and retie every time. A fitting that lets you swap heads in ten seconds means you actually fish the correct weight instead of putting up with the wrong one.

What weight should I use?

The lightest that reaches the depth you want and keeps your line near vertical. If your line streams away at an angle, go heavier. If the bait falls like a stone and you cannot feel the bottom, go lighter.

How do I rig the soft plastic?

Nose first onto the hook, threaded along the body, with the point out through the back so the bait sits straight and flush against the head collar. A crooked bait spins and twists the line.

Is lead safe to handle?

Lead sinkers are used worldwide and handling them occasionally is not a hazard, but sensible practice is worth following: do not hold them in your mouth, do not let children play with them, and wash your hands before eating after a session. Some countries restrict lead in freshwater fisheries - Tanzania does not.

What will it catch around Dar es Salaam?

Depends entirely on the weight and the bait. Light heads off jetties and creeks for queenfish, snapper and grunter; heavy heads over reef and drop-offs for grouper, jobfish and kingfish.
