Highlights

Cotton on the outside, polyester where it counts

The look and hand-feel of cotton rope without the weakness. 30 m of 3.5 mm on a roll, packing to the size of a fist.

30 m on a roll

Enough to re-line a tent completely and still have rope for a ridge line, a washing line and spares.

3.5 mm, the lighter size

Right for lightweight tents, tarps, hanging lines and general camp use. Step up to the 4.5 mm for heavy canvas.

Cotton over polyester

Cotton keeps the matt look and the grip that makes knots hold; the polyester blend inside keeps it strong and stops it rotting when wet.

200 g, packs to 80 x 65 mm

A roll the size of a fist that lives in the tent bag rather than being a decision each trip.

About this product

Naturehike Cotton Camping Rope – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Tanzania.

Synthetic guy line works, but it looks like what it is. Cotton-covered rope is what turns a functional pitch into a camp that looks like somewhere you want to be – the reason it has become standard on canvas bell tents, tarps and canopies. This is Naturehike’s version, a cotton outer over a polyester blend, so the look is cotton and the strength and weather resistance are polyester.

That combination matters in Tanzania. Pure cotton rope absorbs water, goes heavy, stretches when wet and eventually rots – a real problem in coastal humidity and in the long rains. The polyester blend inside keeps the line stable when it is damp and stops it degrading over a season, while the cotton outer keeps the soft feel and the matt finish that make it pleasant to handle and easy on the eye.

It is supplied as a roll to cut to length, and it does far more than guy lines. It works as a washing line between two trees, as a ridge line for a tarp, for hanging lanterns along an awning, and for lashing gear down in a vehicle. Cotton-covered rope also knots and holds beautifully – it grips itself in a way slick synthetic cord does not, which makes a taut-line hitch behave.

It comes in brown and a grey-green, both of which sit well against canvas and against the landscape. Message us about which colours are currently in the Dar es Salaam showroom.

Questions

Good to know

Should I choose 3.5 mm or 4.5 mm?

3.5 mm for lightweight tents, tarps, hanging lines and general camp use, and you get 30 m of it. 4.5 mm for heavy canvas tents and large canopies, at 20 m to the roll. If in doubt for a bell tent, take the thicker one.

How do I stop the cut ends fraying?

Wrap the end tightly with a few turns of tape, cut through the middle of the tape, and the wrap stays on the end. Melting does not work well here because the cotton outer chars rather than sealing.

Is it strong enough for a canvas bell tent?

Yes, this is exactly what cotton-blend rope of this thickness is used for. The 4.5 mm is the one to choose for a heavy canvas tent or a large canopy; 3.5 mm suits lighter tents and tarps.

Does it rot or stretch in the rain?

The polyester blend inside is what prevents that. Pure cotton rope absorbs water, stretches and eventually rots - a real issue in Tanzanian humidity and the long rains. This holds up far better.

Can I use it for climbing, towing or lifting?

No. This is camp cord for tents, tarps, awnings and light gear. It is not climbing rope, rigging line or a tow strap, and it must never take a person's weight.

Which colour will I receive?

It is made in brown and a grey-green. Stock rotates, so message us before ordering and we will tell you which colours are on the shelf in Dar es Salaam.

Can I wash it?

Rinse it in fresh water if it has been in salt or mud, and let it dry fully before rolling it up. Rope stored damp is what develops mildew, cotton outer or not.

Do you sell it by the metre?

It is sold as a complete roll rather than cut lengths, which works out better value and leaves you spare for repairs and extra lines.

Do you deliver upcountry?

Yes, we ship across Tanzania. Message us with your town and we will confirm cost and timing.
