The ST01 is Naturehike’s straightforward three-section telescopic pole in 6061 alloy – the same grade used in bike frames and tent poles – and it does the job poles are actually for without the price or the fragility of carbon.

The practical difference is what happens when things go wrong. Wedge a carbon pole between rocks and lever it sideways and it can crack. Do the same to 6061 aluminium and it bends, and usually keeps working. For a pole that is going to be handed between people, strapped to the outside of a bag and used on rough ground, that matters more than saving eighty grams.

The three sections telescope and lock, so you can set it short for a steep climb, long for a descent, and collapse it right down to pack. Do I need one pole or two?

What length does it adjust to?
