The measure of a trekking pole is what it does on the way down. Descending Kibo, or dropping off the Usambara ridges, every step lands your body weight plus your pack onto one knee at a time. A pair of poles redirects a real share of that into your arms – and this one adds internal springs that absorb the shock of each plant before it reaches your wrists and elbows.
The shaft is 7075 T6 aluminium, the aircraft-grade alloy: stronger than ordinary aluminium for the same weight, which means the pole stays light without becoming whippy under load. Three sections telescope and lock over a wide range, from 63 cm right out to 135 cm, so it suits both a short hiker on a climb and a tall one on a descent.
The grips are foam, which absorbs moisture rather than turning slippery in humid Tanzanian heat, with wrist straps that take weight through your forearm instead of your fingers. On the tips it is fully equipped: a tungsten carbide point for rock and packed trail, a removable rubber ferrule for tarmac and hard surfaces, and a trekking basket for soft ground, mud and sand.
It is a well-specified pole at an accessible price, and a sensible first pair for anyone heading up Kilimanjaro or Meru who has not used poles before. Tungsten carbide, shock absorption and an aircraft alloy shaft are usually found much further up the range.
