The opening is what makes it usable. It is U-shaped, so the top folds right back and you can see and reach everything at once. Anyone who has excavated a duffel bag looking for one thing at the bottom will recognise why that matters more than a litre figure. A zipped compartment expands the capacity when a trip needs more room than you planned.
