Highlights

Three and a quarter metres of reach

From a high wall, a rocky ledge or a boat with real freeboard, a short net is useless. This one extends to 326 cm and still folds down to 64 cm for the car.

122 to 326 cm telescopic

Real reach when you need it, from a high jetty, rock ledge or boat.

Folds to 64 cm

The head folds and the handle collapses, so it fits in a car boot or a rod bag.

Rubber-coated knotless mesh

Hooks lift out instead of tangling, and the fish keeps its slime coat.

60 x 50 cm net head

Big enough for a decent fish rather than a token frame.

Product description

About this product

Reach is the thing people underestimate when they buy a landing net. From the deck of a boat with any freeboard, from a harbour wall, or from a rock ledge above a surge, a 1.8 m net simply does not get to the fish – and the fish is lost while you lean out over the water trying.

The Type-D telescopes from 122 cm up to 326 cm, which covers all of that, and then collapses to 64 cm with the head folded, so it travels in a car boot or a rod bag instead of living permanently in a garage.

The handle is carbon fibre, which is what makes 326 cm usable – at that reach, weight at the far end is what makes a net waver just as the fish comes over it, and carbon keeps that under control far better than aluminium.

The mesh is rubber-coated and knotless. Hooks sit on the surface rather than threading through it, so a treble comes out in seconds instead of minutes, and the smooth surface leaves a fish slime coat intact – the layer that protects it from infection after release.

The head measures 60 by 50 cm, which is a genuine landing net rather than a token frame.

Questions

Good to know

When do I need 326 cm of reach?

From a boat with real freeboard, a harbour wall, a high jetty, or a rock ledge above a surge. Anywhere you would otherwise have to lean out over the water to reach the fish, which is how people fall in and lose fish.

Why rubberised mesh rather than nylon?

Nylon mesh strips slime and scales, tangles hooks hopelessly, and gets caught in gill covers. Rubberised knotless mesh does none of those things: hooks sit on top of it rather than through it, and a fish comes out of it with its slime coat intact. If you release fish, it is the only mesh worth having.

Does a telescopic handle flex at full extension?

Some flex is unavoidable at 326 cm - that is physics, not a fault. Carbon controls it far better than aluminium, and the technique is to let the fish come to the net rather than pushing the net out at it.

How do I net a fish properly?

Put the net in the water and lead the fish over it head first, then lift. Never chase a fish with the net or scoop from behind - that is how fish are lost at the last moment.

Type-C or Type-D?

The Type-C is a fixed 180 cm, lighter and simpler. The Type-D telescopes and folds, which suits high walls, boats with freeboard and anyone who needs it to fit in a car. Buy on reach.

Will the head take a big fish?

The head is 60 x 50 cm, which handles a good fish. For something very large, lead it into the net in the water and support the head with your other hand rather than lifting the whole weight on the handle.

Can I use it in salt water?

Yes. Rinse the mesh, the joints and the telescopic sections in fresh water afterwards and dry before collapsing - salt in the sections is what seizes a telescopic handle.

How do I look after a landing net?

Rinse the mesh in fresh water after every sea trip and let it dry fully before folding it away - a damp net folded in a hot boot goes rank within days. Check the joint between the head and the handle, which is where nets fail.
