Highlights

Folds, so you actually carry it

A grip that folds to 185 mm fits in a pocket or a vest. A rigid one stays at home, which is where it is no use at all.

Folds and extends

185 mm closed, 285 mm extended - pocket size when packed, full reach when used.

190 g

Light enough to carry on a belt or in a vest all day without noticing it.

Aluminium alloy

Strong and corrosion resistant, and much lighter than steel.

Three colours

Green, blue and red - and a bright colour is easier to find in a boat.

Product description

About this product

The most useful fishing tool is the one you have with you. A rigid fish grip lives in a boat locker or a bag and is rarely to hand when a fish is thrashing on a deck; a folding one closes to 185 mm, fits in a pocket or a vest, and is therefore actually there.

Extended it reaches 285 mm, which is enough length to hold a fish comfortably away from you while you work a hook out. The extra reach matters more than it sounds on anything with teeth.

It is aluminium alloy, so it is strong, corrosion resistant, and light – 190 g, which is nothing on a belt. The handle is non-slip, which is the other requirement for a tool used with wet hands.

Three colours are made – green, blue and red – and there is a practical argument for the bright ones: a tool dropped in the bottom of a boat among wet gear is far easier to find if it is red.

The usual rule applies. Grip the lower jaw, support the fish body with your other hand, and keep it horizontal. Never hang a heavy fish vertically from its jaw, particularly one you intend to release.

Questions

Good to know

Why does folding matter?

Because a tool you carry is worth more than a better tool left at home. At 185 mm folded it fits in a pocket or a vest, so it is with you when a fish is on the deck rather than in a locker somewhere.

Does a lip grip hurt the fish?

Used properly, less than a hand in the gills does. The rule is to support the fish body with your other hand and keep it horizontal - never hang a large fish vertically from its jaw, which can damage the jaw and the spine. For a fish you intend to release, less time out of the water matters more than anything else.

How much fish can it hold?

It is an aluminium hand tool, not a lifting device. Grip the jaw, support the body with your other hand, and keep the fish horizontal. For anything very heavy, leave the fish in the water alongside and unhook it there.

Is aluminium strong enough?

For jaw gripping, yes, and it is far lighter than steel and does not rust. Do not use it as a lever or a lifting hook - that is not what it is for.

Which colour should I choose?

A bright one, if you fish from a boat. A red or blue tool dropped among wet gear in the bottom of a boat is far easier to find than a green or black one.

How is it different from your stainless gripper?

This one folds and extends and is lighter; the stainless gripper is a fixed tool with a locking jaw and a more robust build. Choose the folding one for portability, the stainless one if it lives on the boat anyway.

Does it float?

No. Fit it to a lanyard or a retractor if you use it over water, or you will be buying another one.

How do I look after it?

Rinse in fresh water after every sea trip and dry it. Work the jaws and the trigger a few times while rinsing so water gets into the mechanism, and put a drop of light oil on the pivot. Salt in the mechanism is what seizes these tools.
