About this product
Tableware Camping Set – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Tanzania.
This is the cookware set most people end up buying once they have tried to cook for two on a single pot. It is four aluminium alloy pieces – two pots and two shallower pans – each sized so that it slides inside the next, finishing as one stack 14.5 cm across and 18 cm tall. The whole set weighs 450 g, which is roughly what one decent steel pot weighs on its own.
The large pot holds enough for a two-person meal at 14.6 cm across and 11 cm deep, and the second pot at 13 x 9.8 cm is the one that usually ends up boiling water while the first is cooking. The two pans, 13.8 x 6.5 cm and 12.1 x 6.3 cm, work as frying pans, plates or bowls depending on what the meal needs. Aluminium alloy was chosen for the same reason it always is on camping cookware – it takes the heat of a small gas burner quickly, so a 2,000 W camping stove behaves more like a kitchen hob than it has any right to.
Each piece has a handle that folds flat against the body for packing and swings out with a silicone sleeve over the metal. That sleeve is the part you notice in use: on a windy site you can take a pot off the burner with bare hands rather than hunting for a cloth. The interiors carry a non-stick coating, so eggs and ugali release instead of welding themselves to the base, and cleaning is a wipe rather than a scrub – which counts for a lot when every litre of washing water had to be carried in.
For Tanzanian conditions this is a set for two, or for one person who likes a proper meal. On Kilimanjaro or a Udzungwa trek it disappears into a pack; on a Serengeti or Mikumi camping trip it sits in the vehicle box and comes out for coffee and dinner. It runs on a gas burner, a petrol stove or a small charcoal jiko equally well, though the non-stick lining lasts longer if you keep it away from a roaring open wood fire.
