PGM’s three-piece ball in white – a core, a mantle layer and a Surlyn ionomer cover.

The extra layer is the point of a three-piece ball, and it is worth understanding what it actually buys you. A two-piece ball has one job: turn clubhead speed into distance. It is firm, low-spinning, durable and cheap, and the low spin genuinely helps most amateurs because it straightens out a slice.

A three-piece ball can behave differently depending on how hard you hit it. A driver compresses the ball deep into the core, which is built for speed and low spin. A wedge only engages the softer cover and mantle, which generates more spin. That separation – distance off the tee, a little more control into the green – is what the middle layer is for.

One honest caveat. The cover material matters more than the layer count, and this ball has a Surlyn ionomer cover rather than urethane. Surlyn is tougher and cheaper and gives you some of the softer feel, but tour-level greenside spin needs urethane. Position this as a distance-and-feel ball for a mid-handicap player, which is what it is.

What does three-piece change over two-piece?

The middle layer lets the ball behave differently depending on how hard you hit it - lower spin off the driver for distance, more spin off a wedge for control. Two-piece balls do one thing: distance. For an average player the difference shows up around the green rather than off the tee.

Is this a tour-level spin ball?

No, and we would rather say so. Greenside spin at that level requires a urethane cover; this has a Surlyn ionomer cover, which is tougher, cheaper and less grabby. It is a good distance-and-feel ball for a mid-handicap player, not a tour ball.

What compression is it?

PGM do not publish one, so we do not quote one. If you see a compression or a dimple count for this ball elsewhere, it is not from PGM. Ask us and we will request the figure from the supplier.

Should a beginner buy three-piece balls?

Honestly, not necessarily. If you are losing several balls a round, a durable two-piece ball is the smarter purchase and you will not feel the difference. Move to three-piece when you are keeping most of your balls and starting to think about stopping the ball on a green.

Does swing speed matter?

Yes. At slower swing speeds the mantle barely comes into play, so the benefit of the extra layer is smaller than the marketing suggests. The faster and more consistently you swing, the more a three-piece ball gives you.

How many come in a pack?

PGM sell these in three-ball packs. Tell us how many you need and we will confirm what we can supply.

Where can I play in Tanzania?

The Gymkhana Club course in central Dar es Salaam is the main city option, and Lugalo Golf Course sits just outside it. Upcountry there are courses at Arusha, Moshi and Morogoro, and several of the estate and plantation courses welcome visitors. Ring ahead - green fee arrangements for non-members vary.
