Highlights

Baseball or softball? Ask us first

A baseball is about 23 cm around; a softball is 30 cm. They are not interchangeable, and this listing arrived described as both. Rather than guess, we have flagged it - tell us which you need and we will confirm what is in the shop.

Hand-sewn PU leather

Stitched rather than glued, which is what keeps a ball together through repeated hard contact.

Hard core

A firm centre, as a real practice ball needs - foam training balls behave completely differently off a bat.

Sold as a pair

Two balls, which is about the minimum for any useful practice session.

Supplier description says softball, listing title said baseball - ask us before ordering.

Product description

About this product

Professional Training Baseball – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Tanzania.

These are hand-sewn PU leather practice balls with a hard core, supplied as a pair.

First, the thing we need to flag. Our supplier-s description calls them practice softballs while the listing title said baseball. Those are genuinely different balls: a baseball is about 23 cm in circumference and around 145 g, while a softball is roughly 30 cm and 180 g. You cannot substitute one for the other – the bat, the glove and the game are all different. Tell us which you need and we will confirm what is actually in stock before you order.

What we can describe is the construction, and it matters. A hand-sewn ball has its cover stitched on rather than glued, which is what holds a ball together through hundreds of hard contacts. Glued practice balls come apart at the seam within a few sessions. PU leather is the synthetic cover used on most practice balls – tougher than real leather outdoors, unbothered by damp, and considerably cheaper.

The hard core is the other essential. Soft foam training balls have their place for very young children and indoor work, but they come off a bat completely differently and teach nothing about real contact. A practice ball with a firm centre behaves like the real thing.

Buy more than two if you are practising seriously. Any hitting session with fewer than a dozen balls is mostly spent fetching, and fetching is not practice. Two is the right number for catch and throw.

Questions

Good to know

Are these baseballs or softballs?

That is exactly what we are confirming. Our supplier describes them as softballs and the listing title said baseball. They are quite different - a baseball is about 23 cm around and 145 g, a softball about 30 cm and 180 g. Ask us and we will confirm the stock before you order.

What is the difference between a baseball and a softball?

Size mainly, and everything that follows from it. A softball is considerably larger and heavier, pitched underarm, and hit with a different bat and caught with a different glove. Despite the name, a softball is not soft.

Why does hand sewn matter?

Because glued covers come apart. A practice ball takes hundreds of hard contacts, and stitching is what holds the cover on through that. A glued ball splits at the seam within a few sessions.

Is PU leather as good as real leather?

For practice, better. Real leather is softer in the hand and is what match balls use, but it absorbs water, marks easily and costs several times as much. PU shrugs off damp grass and dust, which is what a practice ball meets.

How many should I buy?

Two is right for catch and throw. For batting practice, a dozen or more - otherwise the session is mostly spent walking after balls, which is not practice.

Can children use them?

They are hard balls, so they are used with a glove and with the usual care. For very young children starting out, a softer training ball and a tee is the safer and more productive route.

Do you deliver in Dar es Salaam?

Yes. We deliver across Dar es Salaam and ship nationwide to Arusha, Mwanza, Dodoma, Zanzibar and beyond. You can also collect from our shop.
