Highlights

Light is the right ball for a child

A heavy ball arrives fast, hurts when it hits you and is difficult for a small player to get the bat to. A light one floats in, lets a child watch it onto the bat, and does no harm when it strikes a shin. Hit the ball and you play again tomorrow.

Light grade

Slower through the air and off the bat, so a young player has time to see it and play it.

Gentle on impact

Very little sting, which is what keeps children from developing a flinch.

Yellow

The most visible colour against most surfaces and in poor light.

Indoor friendly

Light enough for a corridor, a hall or a garden without breaking things.

Product description

About this product

Light Tennis Cricket Ball – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Dar es Salaam.

This is the light grade of tennis ball for cricket, in yellow – the ball to start children on.

The reason to choose light over heavy is not only safety, though it is safer. It is time. A heavy ball travels fast, and a child who cannot get the bat to it in time simply misses, over and over, and stops enjoying the game. A light ball comes through slowly enough for them to watch it onto the bat and actually hit it – and a child who hits the ball comes back tomorrow.

It is also much kinder on impact. A ball that hurts teaches a child to flinch and pull away from the line, which is a habit that takes years to undo and limits them permanently. The whole reason soft and light balls exist in junior cricket is to prevent exactly that.

For indoor use it is the only sensible choice – light enough for a hall, a corridor or a garden without putting anything through a window.

Be aware of what it is not. It will not carry off the bat for an adult, it will not bounce properly on grass, and any breeze moves it. For teenagers and adults on a hard surface, the heavy grade is the right ball.

Yellow is the more visible colour in most conditions, which matters when the players are small and the light is going.

Questions

Good to know

Who is the light ball for?

Young children, coaching sessions, indoor play and anyone who wants the ball to come through gently. It gives a small player time to see the ball and hit it, which is the single thing that keeps them interested.

Why not start a child on a heavy ball?

Because it arrives too fast to hit and hurts when it does not. A child who keeps missing and keeps getting stung develops a flinch and stops playing. The light ball is how you avoid both.

Can adults use it?

Not usefully, on a hard surface outdoors - it will not carry off the bat and the wind moves it. Indoors, in a hall, it is perfectly good for adults doing catching and technique work.

Is it safe indoors?

It is the safest ball for indoor cricket, though nothing hit hard indoors is entirely safe. Clear breakables, use a soft bat if the players are very young, and keep the pitch short.

Heavy or light - how do I choose?

By who is playing and where. Children, indoors, or gentle games: light. Teenagers and adults on concrete or a compound: heavy. Many households end up with both.

When should a child move up?

When they are consistently hitting the light ball and are not intimidated by pace - usually around nine or ten. Move to a heavy tennis ball before anything harder, and only to a leather ball with full protective equipment.

Do you deliver in Dar es Salaam?

Yes. We deliver across Dar es Salaam and ship nationwide to Arusha, Mwanza, Dodoma, Zanzibar and beyond. You can also collect from our shop.
