This is a full-size moulded PVC cricket bat in black, for tennis-ball and taped-ball cricket.

It is worth saying plainly what this is and is not. It is not a willow bat and it will not perform like one against a hard ball – do not use it against a leather ball, because PVC has none of willow-s compression and rebound and the bat will not do the job. What it is built for is the version of cricket most people actually play: a tennis ball or a taped ball, on a street, a compound, a beach or a school yard.

For that, PVC is better than willow in every practical way. There is no grain to split along, no toe to crack, no edges to knock in and no oil to apply. It can be left in the rain, dropped on concrete, used on sand, and stored in a hot car, and it will be exactly the same bat next season. A good Kashmir bat used the same way would be finished within a year.

It also costs a fraction of a willow bat, which matters when it is going to be shared by everyone in a compound and occasionally used as a wicket, a stump and a tool for retrieving a ball from a roof.

Full size means a proper adult-length bat rather than a child-s toy. For younger children, a shorter bat is easier to control – tell us the height of the player and we will advise.

Good to know

Can I use it with a leather ball?

No. PVC has none of willow-s compression and rebound, so it will not perform, and a hard ball will damage it. Use a willow bat for hard-ball cricket - we stock Kashmir willow from about a fifth of the price of English willow.

Does it need knocking in or oiling?

Neither. That is one of the main reasons to buy one. It is moulded plastic - there is no grain to bind and no timber to feed.

Will it last?

Far longer than a willow bat used the same way. Rain, sand, sun, salt and concrete make no difference to PVC. The usual way one ends is being left where a car reverses over it.

Is it any good for tennis-ball cricket?

Yes, and that is exactly what it is for. Against a tennis ball or a taped ball the rebound comes mostly from the ball rather than the bat, so PVC performs perfectly well.

What size should a child use?

Full size suits players from about 5ft7. For younger children a shorter bat is much easier to control - tell us the player-s height and we will advise on the right length.

Does the colour affect anything?

No, only the look. Both colours are the same bat.
