Highlights

The reel serious jiggers save for

Nine bearings, a one-piece HAGANE body and MicroModule II gears. At depth, with a heavy jig, a reel either feels connected to what is happening or it does not - this one does.

HAGANE one-piece metal body

No flex under load, so the gears stay in mesh at full drag and the reel keeps its feel.

MicroModule II gearing

More, finer teeth in mesh at once - the reason the retrieve has no detectable grain.

Infinity Drive

The spool shaft runs on a low-friction sleeve, so cranking stays light exactly when the load is heaviest.

500 m of PE 1.5, 9+2 bearings

Deep-water capacity in a compact, very smooth round frame.

Product description

About this product

Shimano Ocean Conquest – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Dar es Salaam.

Slow-pitch and light jigging are techniques built on feel. You are working a metal jig 80 or 120 metres down, and everything you know about what it is doing comes up the braid and through the reel. A reel with any flex in its frame, or any grain in its gears, blurs that signal. That is what the Ocea Conquest exists to avoid.

The body is HAGANE – a single rigid piece of metal rather than a frame with bolted sideplates – so nothing twists when you put 8 kg of drag through it. The gears are MicroModule II, using more and finer teeth so a greater number are meshed at any instant, which is what removes the last trace of roughness from the retrieve. Nine ball bearings and two roller bearings carry it. Infinity Drive runs the spool shaft on a low-friction sleeve so that winding stays light under heavy load, which is precisely when a lesser reel starts to feel like hard work.

PG means power gear: 4.8:1, returning 65 cm per crank. Low gearing multiplies torque, which is what you want when lifting a fish and a heavy jig from depth. The 43 mm spool holds 500 metres of PE 1.5, 380 of PE 2 or 250 of PE 3, and X-Protect gives water-repellent protection for saltwater use.

Two things worth knowing. The 300PG is right-hand retrieve; the 301PG is the left-hand model, sold separately. And Shimano build several variants of this reel – the plain 300PG here, and CT versions with a Fall Lever that controls the rate of the jig fall. Tell us which you want and we will confirm what is in stock.

Questions

Good to know

Is it Ocean Conquest or Ocea Conquest?

Ocea Conquest. Ocea is Shimano offshore saltwater brand, used across their big-game rods and reels. It is worth knowing the correct spelling when searching for parts or comparing prices.

What does PG mean and should I want it?

Power Gear - the lowest ratio Shimano offer, 4.8:1 here. Low gearing multiplies cranking torque, which is what you want for deep jigging and lifting fish from depth. If you want a fast retrieve for working jigs upward quickly, look at the higher-geared versions instead.

Right or left hand?

The 300PG is right-hand retrieve. Round baitcasters are not reversible, so the left-hand model is the 301PG. Tell us which you need when you order.

What is the difference between this and the CT versions?

The CT models add a Fall Lever, which lets you control the speed at which the jig drops. For slow-pitch fishing, where much of the bite comes on the fall, some anglers consider it essential. This listing is the plain 300PG without it.

Where would I use it around Dar es Salaam?

Offshore of Dar and Msasani, the Mafia channel, the deeper reef edges and pinnacles, and out towards Latham Island. Amberjack, grouper, snapper, jobfish, dogtooth tuna and kingfish all come to jigs here.

What rod should I pair it with?

A casting slow-pitch or light jigging rod. Our CRONY Amazing Slow Jigging ASJC581 and Noeby Voyager blanks are both built for an overhead reel of this class.

Is it sealed for saltwater?

It carries X-Protect water-repellent protection and Shimano list it in their saltwater baitcast category. It is not rated IPX8 like the Spheros SW, so still rinse it gently with fresh water and dry it after every trip.

Why does a reel this size cost what it does?

Nine bearings, a one-piece forged metal body, MicroModule II gearing and Infinity Drive. None of those change the drag figure; all of them change how the reel feels at 100 metres with a fish on. That is what you are buying.
