About this product

A PU leather cue case sized for a two-piece cue, 82 to 86 cm.

A case does three things, and the obvious one is the least important.

It protects the tip and the ferrule. Those are the two parts that get chipped in a car boot or a crowded room, and a damaged ferrule ends a cue’s usefulness as surely as a warped shaft does.

It holds the cue straight while it is not being played with. A cue laid loose across a back seat or propped in a corner of a bar is supported at two points and bends under its own weight, and wood takes a permanent set. A case supports it along its length.

And in this climate it keeps the cue away from the two things that move wood – direct sun and damp air. A cue that lives in a case in a ventilated room stays straight for years; the same cue standing in a humid corner will not.

PU leather is a practical choice here. It wipes clean, holds its shape, and does not absorb moisture the way a fabric case does – which matters when the case itself is going to be carried through a rainy season.

One thing to check: this is sized for a two-piece cue that splits at the centre. A three-quarter jointed cue has a longer butt section and needs a longer case. Tell us which cue you have and we will confirm the fit before you order.

Why store cues vertically?

Because a cue leaning against a wall is supported at two points and bends under its own weight, and wood takes a permanent set. That is how cues warp, and a warped cue cannot be put right. A rack holds it straight.

Does a rack matter in a humid climate?

More than in a dry one. Wood moves with moisture, and a cue that is being held in a slight bend while the humidity does its work will hold that bend. Vertical storage plus somewhere ventilated and out of direct sun is the whole of cue care.

How do I check whether a cue is warped?

Roll it on a flat table and watch the tip. A straight cue rolls smoothly; a warped one lifts and drops visibly. Do it when you buy a cue and occasionally afterwards.

Wall-mounted or floor standing?

Floor standing needs no fixing and can be moved, which suits a rented room or a table that might move. Wall-mounted saves floor space and cannot be knocked over. Both hold cues the same way.

How many cues does a room need?

More than you think. A table that gets used socially wants four or five cues so nobody is waiting, plus a rest handle or two. That is the reason twelve-space racks exist.

Should cue cases go in a rack too?

A cue in a closed case is already supported straight, so a case can lie flat on a shelf. What must not happen is a cue left loose against a wall, in or out of its case.

What length cue should I buy?

The standard is 57 to 58 inches, which suits most adults. If you are much taller than average, a 58 inch cue or an extension is worth having; for a child, a shorter cue is genuinely easier to control. The other question is joint: a one-piece cue plays best but does not travel, which is why most players use a two-piece or three-quarter jointed cue.
