Product description

About this product

The KMC X9 is the 9-speed chain in the X-Series – the step up from 8-speed, and the point at which chains switch to the narrower 11/128 inch roller width that every drivetrain from 9 to 12-speed uses.

KMC design the X-Series around Shimano, SRAM and Campagnolo systems together, which is genuinely useful here: a single chain that works across whatever the bike happens to be running, rather than hunting for a brand-matched part. The X-Bridge chamfering on the inner and outer plates is what lets the chain climb between sprockets cleanly when you are pushing, not just when you are soft-pedalling.

At 277 g it is marginally lighter than the X8, which has more to do with the narrower plates than with any material difference.

It is supplied at 116 links and must be sized to your drivetrain before fitting. If you are unsure how many links to remove, keep the old chain and bring both to us – matching link count against the worn chain is the reliable method.

Questions

Good to know

How do I know how many speeds my bike has?

Count the sprockets on the rear cassette. That number is the speed count - eight sprockets means an 8-speed chain. The number of chainrings at the front does not change it. If in doubt send us a photo of the cassette.

Do I need to shorten the chain?

Almost certainly. Chains are supplied over-length so they fit the widest range of bikes, and yours must be sized to your drivetrain before fitting. You will need a chain tool. If you are not sure how many links to remove, bring the bike to us with the old chain and we will size it against it.

Is a quick link included?

KMC do not state on their own product pages that a connector is packed in the box, and they sell MissingLink connectors as separate items, so we do not claim one is included. Check the packet - and if it is not there, the matching KMC connector is CL555 for 11-speed and CL552 for 12-speed. Ask us and we will confirm before you ride.

How often should I replace a chain?

Measure it rather than guessing - a chain checker costs very little. Replace at around 0.5% stretch for a 11 or 12-speed drivetrain and 0.75% for wider chains. A worn chain left on will wear the cassette and chainrings to match it, turning a cheap replacement into an expensive one.

Will it last in Tanzanian conditions?

Chain life here is set by cleaning, not by brand. Fine dust bound into chain lube becomes an abrasive paste, and that paste is what wears the rollers and pins. Clean and re-lube regularly and a chain lasts as it should; neglect it and no chain will.

Can I use it with Shimano, SRAM or Campagnolo?

KMC design the X-Series around all three of the major derailleur systems, so they cross over in a way that manufacturer-own chains often do not. The exceptions are specific and worth checking before buying - ask us if you run anything unusual.

How do I know it is genuine?

KMC publish a fake-chains page of their own because counterfeits are a real problem in this region. We buy through the proper supply chain rather than open marketplaces. A counterfeit chain can fail under load, which is not a risk worth taking on a component this cheap.

Do you deliver in Dar es Salaam?

Yes. We deliver across Dar es Salaam and send nationwide to Arusha, Moshi, Mwanza, Dodoma, Zanzibar and beyond by courier. Call or WhatsApp us if you need a same-day drop in the city.
