About this product

Yonex POLYTOUR PRO 120 – a 1.20 mm round polyester monofilament, 17 gauge, in a 12 metre set. Yonex build it with SIF, their Silicone Oil Infused Filament technology.

Yonex state it suits all swing speeds, and its defining trait is tension maintenance – it is pre-stretched in manufacture and holds tension better than anything else in the Poly Tour range. That matters a great deal in this climate, where heat drives tension loss faster than anywhere temperate.

The gauge is worth understanding. 1.20 mm is 17 gauge, which is at the thin end – and thin strings bite into the ball more, which produces more spin and more feel, at the cost of breaking sooner. If you break strings regularly, a 1.25 or 1.30 would last you considerably longer. If you never break them, 1.20 is where the playing benefit is.

Polyester is the string for a player with a full swing who hits with spin. It is durable and controlled, and it is unforgiving if you do not generate your own pace – in the hands of a gentle hitter, poly is simply harsh and dead. If that describes you, ask us about DYNAWIRE instead.

One climate note that matters more here than most places: polyester loses tension faster than any other string type, and heat accelerates it sharply. A poly job that would last four months in Europe should be replaced sooner here. If the stringbed feels dead and balls are flying long, it is the string rather than you.

What does string gauge mean?

How thick the string is. It is quoted in millimetres and in a US gauge number where higher means thinner - 1.20 mm is 17 gauge, 1.30 mm is 16. Thinner bites the ball more for extra spin and feel, and breaks sooner. Thicker lasts considerably longer and feels firmer and more controlled, with less spin. 1.25 mm is the sensible middle.

When do strings need replacing?

Long before they break. Strings lose tension and elasticity from the day they go in - the stringbed goes dead while looking perfect. The old rule still holds: restring as many times a year as you play per week. Twice a week, twice a year. At minimum once a year regardless, and sooner here, because heat accelerates tension loss badly.

Polyester or nylon - which should I choose?

Polyester if you break strings, hit with heavy spin and have a full swing: it is durable, controlled and holds up to a hard hitter. Nylon if you do not break strings, if your arm is sensitive, or if you play socially: it is softer, more powerful and far more comfortable. Polyester in the hands of a gentle hitter is just harsh and dead.

Is natural gut a good idea in Dar es Salaam?

Honestly, no - and we would rather say so. Natural gut is the finest-playing string there is, and it absorbs atmospheric moisture. In sustained coastal humidity it swells, softens, loses tension and can fail without warning, and rain or heavy dew effectively ruins it. Buy it only knowing you are accepting a short life.

How does the climate here affect equipment?

Heat is hard on strings - polyester loses tension fastest of all string types and heat accelerates it sharply, so expect to restring more often than a European schedule suggests. Never leave a racket in a car boot. Humidity is hard on grips and on natural gut, which absorbs moisture and softens. And pressurised balls go dead faster in heat, opened or not.

How does string tension affect play?

Lower tension gives more power and a softer feel; higher tension gives more control and a crisper response. The trade is real in both directions, and there is no universally correct number - start in the middle of the racket's recommended range and move 2 lb at a time.

How often should I change my overgrip?

When it stops being tacky, which in this heat and humidity is far sooner than the packet suggests - for a regular player, every few sessions. A slick grip makes you squeeze harder, and squeezing harder is slower, more tiring and how tennis elbow starts.
