Highlights

The durable Super Grap

Same tackiness, firmer feel, and it lasts longer.

Three wraps in the pack

Enough to get through a stretch of regular play without rationing them.

0.65 mm, firmer than standard

0.05 mm thicker than Super Grap and noticeably firmer - a more direct feel through the handle.

Built to last longer

Which is the whole point of the Tough variant, and it matters where sweat kills a grip in days.

Change it often

A slick grip makes you squeeze harder, and squeezing harder is how tennis elbow starts.

Product description

About this product

Yonex Super Grap has been on sale since 1987 and is the best-selling overgrip in the world. Super Grap Tough is the durable evolution of it, and this is the three-wrap pack.

The differences from standard Super Grap are small and specific. Tough is 0.65 mm thick against 0.60 mm, so marginally thicker, and it is noticeably firmer – which gives a more direct feel of the handle through the wrap. And it lasts longer before the tackiness goes, which is the reason the variant exists.

That last point is worth more here than it is anywhere temperate. Sweat and humidity destroy overgrips, and a grip that has gone slick is not a cosmetic problem: when the handle is slippery you unconsciously squeeze harder to hold on, and a tight grip is slower, more tiring, and one of the reliable routes into tennis elbow. In this climate a regular player should expect to change an overgrip every few sessions rather than every few weeks.

The choice between the two is simple. Tough if you play often or sweat heavily; standard Super Grap if you want maximum cushioning, or if you want one of the eleven-plus colours the standard version comes in.

Polyurethane, and equally at home on a tennis, badminton, squash or pickleball handle. Yonex do not publish a width and length for the Tough variant, so we do not quote one.

Questions

Good to know

How often should I change my overgrip?

When it stops being tacky, which in this heat and humidity is far sooner than the packet suggests - for a regular player, every few sessions. A slick grip makes you squeeze harder, and squeezing harder is slower, more tiring and how tennis elbow starts.

How is Tough different from standard Super Grap?

0.65 mm against 0.60 mm, so slightly thicker, and noticeably firmer - more direct feel through the handle. And it lasts longer before going slick, which is the reason the variant exists. Standard Super Grap is softer and comes in more colours.

Overgrip or replacement grip?

An overgrip goes over the grip already on the racket, adding tackiness and a little thickness, and is designed to be changed often and cheaply. A replacement grip is the base layer and is changed rarely. Most players use one replacement grip and a stream of overgrips.

How do I wrap one?

Start at the butt end with the tapered edge, overlap each turn by about a sixteenth of an inch, keep even tension throughout, and finish with the supplied tape below the throat. Wrap away from you on the top of the handle so your hand tightens it rather than unwinding it.

Does it change my grip size?

Slightly - an overgrip adds roughly half a size. If you are between sizes, a bare handle plus an overgrip is a legitimate way of landing in the middle.

How does the climate here affect equipment?

Heat is hard on strings - polyester loses tension fastest of all string types and heat accelerates it sharply, so expect to restring more often than a European schedule suggests. Never leave a racket in a car boot. Humidity is hard on grips and on natural gut, which absorbs moisture and softens. And pressurised balls go dead faster in heat, opened or not.

When do strings need replacing?

Long before they break. Strings lose tension and elasticity from the day they go in - the stringbed goes dead while looking perfect. The old rule still holds: restring as many times a year as you play per week. Twice a week, twice a year. At minimum once a year regardless, and sooner here, because heat accelerates tension loss badly.

Do you deliver in Dar es Salaam?

Yes. We deliver across Dar es Salaam and send nationwide to Arusha, Moshi, Mwanza, Dodoma, Zanzibar and beyond by courier. Call or WhatsApp us if you need a same-day drop in the city.
