About this product

An eight-piece bike cleaning set from Oumers, covering the whole bike rather than just the drivetrain.

Eight pieces buys you the two things a six-piece drivetrain kit leaves out: something to clean wheels and frames with, and something shaped for the awkward gaps around hubs, discs and suspension. A larger set means you can keep the soft frame brush entirely away from the cassette – which sounds fussy until you have transferred black drivetrain grease onto a light-coloured frame and spent an hour getting it off.

The drivetrain tools do the work that matters most here. Fine dust bound into chain lube is an abrasive paste, and that paste is what wears rollers, pins and sprocket teeth. Pedalling does not wear a drivetrain out; grinding paste does.

Use the brushes with a degreaser on the drivetrain and a bike cleaner on the frame – different products for different jobs. Rinse the brushes thoroughly afterwards so old degreaser and grit do not set in the bristles, and keep them out of boiling water, which distorts bristles permanently.

What is the difference between this and a six-piece kit?

The extra pieces are generally a wheel or frame brush and a gap tool for hubs, discs and suspension mounts. A six-piece kit is drivetrain-focused; eight pieces covers the whole bike.

Why keep the frame brush away from the drivetrain?

Because once a brush has cassette grease in it, it carries that grease onto your paint every time afterwards. Having enough brushes to keep them separate is most of the point of a larger set.

What is the right order to wash a bike?

Rinse the worst off with low pressure, degrease and clean the drivetrain first so its grime does not run over clean paint, then wash the frame and wheels, rinse, dry, and lubricate the chain last. Doing the chain first and the frame second is the single commonest mistake.

Do I need cleaners as well?

Yes - a degreaser for the drivetrain and a bike cleaner for the frame. Brushes provide agitation; the chemistry does the lifting. Water alone will not shift oily grime.

Can I use a pressure washer?

Only on a low setting and never aimed at a hub, bottom bracket, headset or suspension seal - high pressure drives water and grit straight past the seals and into the bearings. A bucket, a brush and a hose do a better job with none of the risk.

Why does drying the bike matter so much here?

Because of the salt and the humidity. Water left standing in bolt heads, on the chain and around the cassette starts corrosion quickly on the coast. Dry the bike, then lubricate - ten minutes that adds years to a drivetrain.

What do I do with the dirty water?

Do not pour drivetrain runoff into a storm drain. Degreaser and old chain lube carry heavy metal particles from the chain. Let the solids settle in a bucket, dispose of the residue with solid waste, and pour the rest onto ground rather than into a drain.
