Two rolls of Alien Pros EVA handlebar tape with two end caps – enough to wrap a set of drop bars, in a choice of six colours.

The construction is EVA foam with a frosted anti-slip skin, 3 mm thick, 30 mm wide and 2 metres long per roll. Those are standard drop-bar tape dimensions, and 3 mm is the comfortable middle – thin enough to keep a real sense of the bar, thick enough to take the edge off rough tarmac.

What makes it easy to fit is the full-length self-adhesive gel backing. Peel, wrap and seal – no guessing where the tape will sit, and no unwinding halfway along because a section never stuck. If you have wrapped bars with cheap non-adhesive tape before, this is a noticeably less frustrating afternoon.

The frosted surface and sweat-absorbing foam matter more here than in a cooler climate. Hands sweat constantly on a Dar ride, and a bar tape that becomes slippery when wet is a real problem on a descent. Alien Pros make the anti-slip claim specifically for wet conditions.

How much tape do I need for drop bars?

Two rolls, which is what this kit contains. Each roll is 2 m long and 30 mm wide - standard drop-bar dimensions, with enough spare for the bar-top overlap most people want.

Is finishing tape included?

No. The kit is two rolls plus two end caps. Have a roll of electrical tape ready to finish the wrap at the top of each bar - a small thing, but it stops the job halfway if you have not got it.

Is 3 mm thick enough?

It is the comfortable middle. Thinner tape gives more road feel, thicker tape more cushioning. At 3 mm you keep a clear sense of the bar while taking the sting out of rough tarmac, which suits most riders on most roads here.

Will it get slippery when my hands sweat?

That is what the frosted anti-slip skin is for. Alien Pros make the anti-slip claim specifically for wet conditions, and the EVA foam absorbs sweat rather than sitting on top of it - which matters on a humid Dar ride.

Which way should I wrap?

Start at the bar end and work inwards, overlapping each turn by about a third. Wrap so that the tape tightens rather than loosens when your hands push on it - from the inside outward on the top of the bar.

How long does bar tape last?

Usually a season or two of regular riding, less if the bike gets left in the sun. Replace it when the surface glazes or the foam stops springing back - grip is what it is there for.

Does this fit flat bars too?

It is drop-bar tape. It can be used on bullhorn or aero extensions, but for flat bars you want grips rather than tape.
