Synthetic guy line works, but it looks like what it is. Cotton-covered rope is what turns a functional pitch into a camp that looks like somewhere you want to be – the reason it has become standard on canvas bell tents, tarps and canopies. This is Naturehike’s version, a cotton outer over a polyester blend, so the look is cotton and the strength and weather resistance are polyester.
That combination matters in Tanzania. Pure cotton rope absorbs water, goes heavy, stretches when wet and eventually rots – a real problem in coastal humidity and in the long rains. The polyester blend inside keeps the line stable when it is damp and stops it degrading over a season, while the cotton outer keeps the soft feel and the matt finish that make it pleasant to handle and easy on the eye.
It is supplied as a roll to cut to length, and it does far more than guy lines. It works as a washing line between two trees, as a ridge line for a tarp, for hanging lanterns along an awning, and for lashing gear down in a vehicle. Cotton-covered rope also knots and holds beautifully – it grips itself in a way slick synthetic cord does not, which makes a taut-line hitch behave.
