The failure of a cheap picnic blanket is always the same: the underside soaks through. Twenty minutes on damp grass and everyone is sitting on a cold wet patch. This mat has a PVC waterproof backing bonded under Oxford cloth, so water and damp stay on the ground side and never reach the top.

At 200 x 200 cm it is genuinely family-sized – four square metres, enough for four or five people to sit with food between them rather than perching on the edges. Oxford cloth is the right top surface: it is tough enough for sand, stones and repeated folding, it is comfortable to sit on, and sand does not cling to it. Cleaning is shaking it out, with a wipe from a damp cloth when something gets spilled.

It folds into itself, forming a tote bag with a carrying handle – no separate stuff sack to lose, which is what happens to separate stuff sacks. Folded it carries like a shopping bag, so it goes in a boot, under a pushchair or over a shoulder.

Good to know

Will it keep me dry on damp grass?

Yes. The PVC backing blocks moisture coming up from the ground, which is the single thing that separates this from an ordinary blanket. It is not designed to keep rain off from above.

How many people fit on it?

At 200 x 200 cm, four or five people can sit comfortably with food between them. A couple with children has room to spare.

Does sand stick to it?

Much less than to a fleece or a cotton blanket. Shake it out and the sand comes off, which matters at Kigamboni and Bagamoyo where a sandy mat otherwise comes home with you.

Can I use it as a groundsheet under a tent?

Yes, many people do - under a tent porch or inside a tent as a clean floor. Keep it clear of the tent's own footprint edges so rain does not run onto it.
