Highlights

Lights a whole jiko of charcoal in under a minute

Clamps onto a standard butane cassette can. Press the igniter, set the flame, and the fire is lit - no paraffin, no newspaper, no waiting.

Up to 1,300 degrees C

Real heat, not a kitchen lighter. It lights charcoal straight from cold and sears meat properly rather than just browning it.

Piezo ignition

One press lights it. No matches to keep dry, which matters in Dar es Salaam humidity and on a windy site.

Works at any angle

The 360 degree design keeps burning upside down or sideways, so you can reach under a grate or into the bottom of a jiko.

Adjustable flame

Turn it down for caramelising sugar or warming a pipe joint, turn it up to start a fire. Same tool, two very different jobs.

Product description

About this product

Gas BBQ Flame Gun – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Dar es Salaam.

Starting charcoal with paraffin and newspaper takes twenty minutes and makes the first round of meat taste of paraffin. This torch head does the same job in under a minute and leaves no smell at all. It clamps onto an ordinary butane cassette canister – the long can that portable gas stoves use, sold in every supermarket in Dar es Salaam – and turns it into a proper blowtorch.

The flame reaches up to 1,300 degrees C, which is enough for far more than lighting a fire. Cooks use it to sear steak after a slow cook, to blacken peppers, to caramelise the sugar on a creme brulee and to finish the skin on grilled fish. Outside the kitchen the same tool loosens a seized bolt, heats a pipe joint, or dries out a damp fitting.

Two details make it pleasant to use rather than merely powerful. The flame is fully adjustable, so it goes from a soft blue tip for delicate work to a hard roaring jet for ignition. And it runs at any angle, including upside down – a copper preheating tube keeps the gas vaporising properly when the can is inverted, which is exactly the position you end up in when reaching under a grate. A ceramic coil around the nozzle keeps the heat off the handle so it stays comfortable to hold through a long session.

It suits anyone who braais in Tanzania, camps with a cassette stove, or keeps a workshop. The canister is not included – it is the standard butane cassette can, and we stock those alongside it.

Questions

Good to know

Which gas canister does it fit?

It clamps onto a standard long butane cassette canister - the same can used by the portable cassette gas stoves sold everywhere in Tanzania. Push it on, twist to lock, and it is ready. It does not screw onto a threaded camping canister and it does not connect to a domestic LPG cylinder.

Is a gas canister included?

No. It takes a standard butane cassette canister, which we stock separately in Dar es Salaam. One can lasts a long time in this kind of intermittent use.

Can I really use it to light charcoal?

That is what most of our customers buy it for. Hold the flame against the coals for thirty to sixty seconds and they catch, with no paraffin taste in the first round of meat.

Does it work upside down?

Yes. The copper preheating tube keeps the gas vaporising when the can is inverted, so you can reach under a grate or down into a jiko without the flame dying.

Is it safe to use in a kitchen?

Yes, in a ventilated kitchen and with the usual care - keep it away from curtains and anything flammable, never point it at a gas canister, and let the nozzle cool before putting it down. The ceramic coil keeps the handle cool but the nozzle stays hot for a while after use.

Can I use it for soldering or workshop jobs?

Yes. At 1,300 degrees it handles soft soldering, freeing seized bolts and heating pipe joints. It is not a substitute for an oxy-acetylene torch on heavy steel.

How long does one canister last?

It depends entirely on the flame setting and how long you run it. For lighting a braai a few times a week, a single cassette can lasts weeks rather than days.

Do you deliver upcountry?

Yes, we ship across Tanzania. Gas canisters have transport restrictions on some routes, so message us and we will tell you what can go to your town.

Where do these figures come from?

The figures on this page come from the supplier's own documentation rather than an independently tested manufacturer specification, and the table marks them as such. If a particular figure matters to you, ask us and we will check the item in the Dar es Salaam showroom before you buy.
