Highlights

Legs only, arms parked

A kickboard floats your arms so all the work comes from the legs. It is how swimmers build kick strength, and how they find out their kick is doing less than they thought.

42 x 27 cm

A generous square board that gives real stability to hold on to.

Dense foam

Buoyant, durable, and it does not waterlog or go soft.

Isolates the legs

Arms parked on the board so the entire effort comes from the kick.

Adults and children

Big enough for an adult, stable enough for a child under supervision.

Product description

About this product

Most swimmers kick badly and do not know it, because the arms hide the problem. A kickboard removes them from the equation: arms out in front on the board, and everything that happens is down to your legs.

The first hundred metres are usually a shock. A kick that felt strong turns out to move you very slowly, and that is the useful information. Kick sets are how it improves – and kick strength matters more in open water and rough conditions than in a calm pool lane.

The square shape gives stability. A narrow or contoured board is faster through the water but rolls more, and for training – where you want to isolate the legs rather than go fast – the stable shape is the right one.

The technique that matters: kick from the hip, not the knee, keep the legs long and the kick small and fast, and keep the toes pointed. A big bent-knee kick moves a great deal of water and very little swimmer.

The foam is dense and closed cell, so it does not waterlog. Rinse it after every session and keep it out of the sun – chlorine and UV together are what make foam go chalky and crumble.

Questions

Good to know

What is a kickboard for?

Isolating the legs. Your arms rest on the board so all the propulsion comes from your kick, which is how you build kick strength and find out what your legs are actually contributing.

How do I use a kickboard properly?

Hold the near edge, arms extended, face in or out of the water as you prefer, and kick from the hip rather than the knee. Keep the legs long and the kick small and fast - a big bent-knee kick moves a lot of water and very little swimmer.

Kickboard or pull buoy?

Opposite jobs. A kickboard floats the arms so you train the legs; a pull buoy floats the legs so you train the arms. A structured swim session usually uses both.

Can a child use it to learn to swim?

With supervision and within their depth, a kickboard is a common learning aid. It is not a buoyancy aid or a life-saving device, and a child using one should always be supervised and able to stand.

Why square rather than a contoured board?

Stability. A narrow or contoured board is faster through the water but rolls more. For training, where the point is to isolate the legs rather than go quickly, a stable square board is better.

Is my kick supposed to be this tiring?

Yes, at first. Kicking is far harder work than most swimmers expect, because the legs are large muscles doing relatively inefficient work. It improves quickly with regular kick sets.

Will it hold me up if I let go?

It floats, but it is not a buoyancy aid and must never be treated as one. Do not rely on it in deep water and never give one to a non-swimmer as flotation.

How do I look after foam training aids?

Rinse in fresh water after every session and dry in the shade. Chlorine and UV both break down closed-cell foam - a board left on a sunny poolside all summer goes chalky and crumbles at the edges.
