Highlights

The buckle goes at the back for a reason

A chest strap a toddler can undo is a strap that will be undone, usually in the deep end. The release sits behind the shoulder blades where small hands cannot get to it, and the strap stops the vest riding up over the chin when the child is lifted by the water.

Vest plus arm floats

Buoyancy front, back and on both arms, so the child sits level in the water instead of tipping forward.

Rear quick-release buckle

Out of a child-s reach, but instant for an adult.

Adjustable chest strap

Takes up the slack so the vest cannot slide up over the face.

Free arms and legs

The float sits on the torso and upper arms, leaving the elbows, hips and knees free to learn a real stroke.

Product description

About this product

Kids Swimming Float Ves – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Tanzania.

This is a training jacket rather than a lifejacket. The foam panels sit on the chest and back and two float bands wrap the upper arms, which gives a young child enough lift to hold their head clear without an adult holding them – and enough freedom at the elbows, hips and knees to actually kick and reach.

That balance is the whole design problem with children-s floats. Arm bands alone push the shoulders up and tip a child face-forward. A plain foam vest with no arm support lets a nervous child roll. Combining the two keeps the body flat and level, which is the position a swimmer needs to learn anyway. As the child improves you can deflate or remove the arm sections and let the vest do less.

The chest strap adjusts for size and buckles behind the shoulders. Two things follow from that. The child cannot release it themselves, which is the point; and the strap stops the vest floating up over the chin when the water lifts it, which is what happens with an unstrapped vest and is frightening for a small child.

None of this makes it a lifesaving device. It has no collar to turn an unconscious child face-up and it is not a certified buoyancy aid. It is for a supervised pool or a calm shallow shore with an adult in the water within reach.

Questions

Good to know

Is this a lifejacket?

No. It is a swim training vest. It has no collar to turn a child face-up and it is not certified as a lifesaving device. For boat trips, a dhow ride or anything offshore, a child needs a proper certified lifejacket.

Why is the buckle at the back?

So the child cannot undo it. A front buckle within reach of curious fingers gets released in the water, usually at the worst moment. An adult can still release it in one movement.

At what age can a child use it?

It is sized for toddlers and young children, but fit matters more than age. The vest should sit snug on the chest with no slack to slide upwards. Try it on dry first and check it does not ride towards the chin when you lift the child by the shoulders.

How does it help a child learn to swim?

By holding them level and leaving their limbs free. A child who feels stable stops thrashing, and a calm child can be taught to kick from the hip and breathe to the side. Reduce the support as they improve - that transition is what builds real swimming.

Can I use it at the beach?

In calm shallow water at a sheltered beach with an adult in the water beside them, yes. Not in surf, not past waist depth for the adult, and not where there is a current. Kigamboni and Coco Beach both get more pull than they look like they do.

How do I look after it?

Rinse in fresh water after chlorine or salt, dry in the shade and store flat. Chlorine and sun both degrade foam, and salt left in the strap webbing stiffens it and wears the buckle.

Does the child still need watching?

Always, and within arm-s reach. A training vest buys an adult a few seconds; it does not replace them. Never leave a child in one unattended, even in shallow water.
