Highlights

Built to end the rally

Tungsten in the frame head puts mass exactly where a smash needs it, and the Rotational Generator System balances the weight across the grip, joint and frame top so the whole racket rotates into the shot rather than fighting you. It is a genuine attacking racket, not a badge.

Head heavy with tungsten

Dense tungsten in the frame head concentrates mass at the point of contact.

Rotational Generator System

Weight distributed across grip end, joint and frame top so the racket turns smoothly into each shot.

Namd shaft

Yonex-s graphite with the resin bonded to the fibres, for a shaft that flexes hard and snaps back fast.

Aero+Box frame

Aerodynamic through part of the head, boxed through the rest: less drag, more stability at contact.

Product description

About this product

Yonex Astrox 99 Play – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Tanzania.

The Astrox 99 Play is the entry-level version of Yonex-s most aggressive racket line, and unlike some Play models it genuinely carries the family-s technologies.

Tungsten is the headline. Yonex build tungsten into the frame head because it is dense – it adds mass exactly where a smash needs it without adding bulk that would slow the swing. That is the whole argument for a head-heavy racket in one material: more of the racket-s weight arrives at the shuttle.

The Rotational Generator System is about how that weight is arranged. Instead of simply loading the head, Yonex distribute weight across the grip end, the shaft joint and the frame top, so the racket rotates smoothly into the shot and recovers quickly afterwards. A racket that is only head-heavy is tiring to swing; one that is balanced this way holds the power and stays manageable.

The Namd shaft is Yonex-s graphite with the resin bonded directly to the carbon fibres rather than sitting between them. It bends further under load and snaps back faster, which is what turns a big swing into shuttle speed.

This is an attacking singles racket, and it asks something of you. If you play doubles at the net or you find a heavy racket tiring by the third game in this heat, the head-light Nanoflare 700 Play will suit you far better. If you play from the back and want to finish rallies, this is the one.

Questions

Good to know

Is this too much racket for a club player?

It can be. It is head-heavy and built for attacking singles, which is tiring to swing for three games in this heat. If you play doubles, or you defend and counter-attack, the Nanoflare 700 Play or the Arcsaber 11 Play will do more for your game.

What does the tungsten actually do?

Tungsten is very dense, so Yonex can add mass at the frame head without adding bulk that would slow the swing through the air. It concentrates weight at the point of contact, which is where a smash gets its power.

Is the Play the same as the Astrox 99 Pro or Tour?

No - it is the entry model in the family. It does genuinely carry the Rotational Generator System, Namd and the Aero+Box frame, but the layup and shaft stiffness are different and more forgiving than the Pro-s.

What is Namd?

Yonex-s graphite material in which the resin is bonded directly to the carbon fibres rather than simply filling between them. The shaft bends further and returns faster, which converts a big swing into shuttle speed rather than losing it in the shaft.

What string tension should I ask for?

Lower than you think, and never above the maximum printed on the frame. Club players here are usually best between 22 and 24 lb - lower tension gives a bigger sweet spot and more power for less effort. High tension only pays off if you already generate your own power, and it breaks strings and frames faster in this heat.

What does the grip size G4 or G5 mean?

It is the circumference of the handle. G5 is the smallest commonly sold, G4 one size larger. A grip can always be built up with an overgrip, so if you are between sizes take the smaller one - you cannot shrink a handle that is too big.

How often should a racket be restrung?

The old rule is to restring as many times a year as you play per week. Strings also lose tension sitting unused, and heat and humidity here speed that up - a racket strung six months ago has softened whether you played on it or not.

How should I look after a racket in this climate?

Keep it out of a hot car. Heat is what destroys rackets here - it softens the resin in the graphite and cooks the string tension out. Store it in a cover, out of direct sun, and never leave it in a boot all afternoon.

Do you deliver in Dar es Salaam?
