Product description

About this product

Handheld Uhf Walkie Talkie – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Tanzania.

Sixteen channels, a torch, and a battery that lasts a working day.

The BF-666S is the plain, cheap, reliable end of the Baofeng range. No display, no keypad, no menus to get lost in: sixteen channels on a rotary knob, a push-to-talk key, volume, and that is the whole interface. For a security team, an events crew or a group of vehicles, that simplicity is the feature. Nobody can mis-set it.

Baofeng rates the battery at about eight hours of normal use, which in practice is a shift. There is a torch built into the top, VOX for hands-free operation when your hands are busy, an emergency alarm, and a low-battery warning.

On range. Handheld radios are sold on optimistic numbers, so here is the honest version. Baofeng quote about 6 km, and that is achievable with genuine clear line of sight: hilltop to valley, or across open water. In normal use expect 1 to 3 km across open ground and 300 m to 1 km in built-up Dar es Salaam. What limits you is obstruction, not power, which is why a bigger wattage figure would not change these numbers much.

Channels are set with a programming cable and PC software rather than from the radio itself. We can programme them for you before you collect.

Questions

Good to know

What range will I actually get?

Across open ground, 1 to 3 km. In built-up parts of Dar es Salaam, 300 m to 1 km, and less again inside a building. Baofeng quote about 6 km, which is real but needs genuine clear line of sight, such as a hilltop to a valley or across open water. Range is limited by what is in the way, not by wattage.

Why is 5 W not five times better than 1 W?

Because power is the weakest lever on range. Going from 1 W to 5 W is about 7 dB, which in open country buys you perhaps half again as far, and in a city almost nothing, because buildings absorb signal far faster than power can compensate. Antenna height and clear line of sight matter far more.

How many channels can I use, and how do I set them?

Sixteen, chosen on the knob. They are programmed with a USB cable and software on a PC, not from the radio itself, which is deliberate: there is nothing an operator can accidentally change. Tell us what you need and we can programme them before you collect.

What does the tone squelch do?

CTCSS and DCS put a quiet sub-audible tone under your transmission, and the radio only opens the speaker for transmissions carrying the matching tone. In practice it means another group on the same frequency does not interrupt your team. It is privacy from nuisance, not security, since anyone scanning can still hear you.

How long does the battery last?

Baofeng rate about eight hours on the standard 1500 mAh pack, measured at a 5-5-90 duty cycle, which is five per cent transmitting, five per cent receiving and ninety per cent idle. That is a working shift. Heavy talking shortens it noticeably, so a spare battery is worth having for long events.

Note on battery capacity

Baofeng list two different figures for this radio. Their product page and the pack they actually sell are 1500 mAh; their combined manual states 2800 mAh. We have published the 1500 mAh figure because that is the pack Baofeng supply. Aftermarket 2800 mAh packs do exist and fit.

Is it waterproof?

No, and Baofeng publish no ingress rating at all for it. Treat it as a splash risk, not a wet-weather radio. If it is going to be out in rain on a gate or a site, a cheap clear pouch is a sensible precaution.

Will it work with my other Baofeng radios?

Yes, if they are UHF and programmed to the same frequency and tone. It shares the accessory port with the BF-888S family, so earpieces and programming cables for those fit this too.

How do I look after it?

Charge it before it goes flat rather than running it to nothing, since lithium cells dislike being left empty. Keep the antenna screwed on when transmitting, because transmitting without one damages the output stage. Keep the accessory port cover in place to stop dust and sweat getting in, which is what usually kills these radios first.
