Product description

About this product

Pro Projector – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Tanzania.

A genuinely good small projector, as long as you know what it is.

This is the Magcubic HY300 Pro, one of the better-selling compact projectors in the world, and it earns that on value rather than specification. It is a native 1280 x 720 machine. It will accept a 1080p or 4K signal and scale it down to that panel, which is why so many listings for it say 1080p or even 4K. The picture you actually see is 720p.

That is not a criticism at this price. Watching video from a few metres back, 720p on a 60 inch screen looks fine. It only shows on fine text, spreadsheets and small subtitles.

The body pivots through a full range on its stand, so you can set it on a table and tilt it up at the wall, and the vertical keystone corrects itself. It runs Android 11 with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth built in.

Be realistic about the light. This is a dark-room projector. Brightness claims for this model range wildly across sellers, from 120 to 300 ANSI for identical hardware; independent measurements put it at the lower end. Plan for a 50 to 70 inch screen with the lights off, and it will look good.

Key Features

  • Native 1280 x 720 panel, accepts 1080p and 4K input
  • Pivoting body with automatic vertical keystone
  • Android 11 with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
  • 1GB RAM, 8GB storage
  • Built-in speaker
  • Screen mirroring from a phone
  • About 800 g
  • LED rated around 30,000 hours

Who It Suits

  • Films and series in a room you can darken
  • A first projector, or a second one for a bedroom
  • Camping and garden use after dark
  • Anyone who wants a big picture cheaply and is not chasing fine detail

Streaming: read this first. This projector carries Widevine L3 rather than L1, so Netflix and Prime Video are limited to standard definition no matter what you pay for. YouTube is unaffected. Magcubic themselves recommend plugging a streaming stick into the HDMI port and using that instead, which is what we would suggest too.

Buying a Pro Projector in Tanzania

361 Degrees Adventure keeps the pro projector at our showroom in Upanga, Dar es Salaam, with delivery countrywide across Tanzania. Come and handle it before you buy, or order online and collect.

Every pro projector is checked in store before it leaves us, and our staff use the same kit in the field, so you get an honest answer on fit and sizing rather than a sales pitch.

Not sure which pro projector suits you? Call or message the showroom and we will talk you through the options that are actually in stock in Dar es Salaam.

Spare parts and replacements for the pro projector are easier to get here than on an overseas order, which matters once the gear is in use.

Pricing on the pro projector is quoted in Tanzanian shillings, VAT included, so the figure you see is the figure you pay at the counter in Dar es Salaam.

Questions

Good to know

Is it 1080p or 720p?

The panel is 1280 x 720. It accepts a 1080p or 4K signal and scales it down, which is why many listings for this projector say 1080p or 4K. Those describe what you can feed it, not what you see. We would rather tell you plainly than have you discover it at home.

Does 720p look bad?

Not on a screen this size at normal viewing distance. On a 60 inch picture from three metres back, film and television look good. Where 720p shows is fine detail: small subtitles, spreadsheets, presentation text, and anything you would sit close to. For video it is genuinely fine.

How bright is it really?

Honestly, this is the murkiest number in the category. The same hardware is sold as 120, 160, 200, 260, 290 and even 4500 ANSI lumens by different sellers, and some of those figures are light-source lumens with ANSI written after them. Independent measurements put it at the low end. Plan for a dark room and a screen around 50 to 70 inches and you will be happy; plan for 130 inches in daylight and you will not.

Will it work with the lights on?

No. None of the projectors in this class will. It needs curtains drawn and lights off. That is the honest constraint on every small LED projector, not a fault of this one.

Does Netflix work?

It plays, but only at standard definition. The projector carries Widevine L3 rather than L1 certification, and Netflix and Prime Video restrict non-L1 devices to SD regardless of subscription. YouTube is unaffected. Magcubic themselves suggest using a streaming stick on the HDMI input, which restores full quality for a small extra cost. We can supply one.

Does it focus automatically?

The vertical keystone corrects itself, but focus is manual on this model, despite what some listings claim. In practice you set it once for your room and leave it.

How does it compare to the TS-2 we also sell?

The TS-2 has a real 1080p panel and four times the storage, and costs three times as much. If you want sharpness, or you project text, take the TS-2. If you want a big picture for films at the lowest sensible price, this is the better buy and it is not close on value.

How do I look after it?

Keep the vents clear and never run it inside a closed cabinet, because heat is what kills the LED early. Let the fan finish its cool-down before you unplug it. Clean the lens with a lens cloth only. The 8GB of storage fills quickly, so keep files on a USB stick rather than the projector.
