Highlights

The first English willow bat

There is a real step between the best Kashmir bat and the cheapest English willow one, and it is not about grain count or finish. It is that English willow gives the ball back. This is where that step begins in SG-s range.

English willow

The entry grade in SG-s English willow range - a genuine Salix alba caerulea blade.

Contoured blade, pronounced edges

Mass moved out towards the edges, which widens the usable middle.

Shock-absorbing handle

Cane with rubber insertions, so a mis-hit does not jar the hands.

Short handle

The standard adult size, for players from about 5ft7 upwards.

About this product

Bat Sh English Willow – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Dar es Salaam.

The Sierra 150 is the entry point into SG-s English willow range, in short handle.

The reason to step up from Kashmir to English willow is simple and it is about physics rather than status. English willow – Salix alba caerulea – is soft, light and fibrous, so the blade compresses on impact and springs back. Kashmir willow is denser and harder: it absorbs a good deal of that energy instead of returning it. Both are real cricket bats and Kashmir is entirely appropriate for school and tennis-ball cricket, but for a hard ball at club level the difference in carry is obvious to anyone who has used both.

At the entry grade, expect the blade to look less pretty: fewer straight grains, more colour variation, perhaps a knot or a butterfly stain. Those are cosmetic gradings of the cleft and they matter far less to performance than most buyers assume. Some players actively prefer a lower grade, because less-perfect willow is often denser and lasts longer.

Knocking in is essential and it is where most bats are ruined. Six to eight hours with a mallet over a fortnight, edges and toe hardest, then old balls before new ones. The bat is hard pressed at the factory but not finished, and a bat taken straight into a match will crack.

SG do not publish a blade weight for this model. Tell us what you want and we will weigh the stock.

Questions

Good to know

English or Kashmir willow - which should I buy?

English willow (Salix alba caerulea) is softer, lighter and more fibrous, so it compresses and springs back - that is where a bat gets its rebound. Kashmir willow is denser and harder: it costs a fraction as much, needs less preparation and lasts well, but it never hits the ball as far. For a hard leather ball at club level, English willow. For tennis-ball cricket, school use or a first bat, Kashmir.

Is a lower-grade bat a worse bat?

Cosmetically yes, in performance usually far less than people expect. Grading is about grain count, straightness and blemishes in the cleft. Lower-grade willow is often denser and more durable, and plenty of professionals have used unbranded low-grade clefts by choice.

Does the bat need knocking in?

Yes, and it is not optional on a willow bat. Knocking in compresses and binds the fibres at the edges and the toe so they can take a hard ball without breaking. Allow six to eight hours with a mallet spread over a couple of weeks, working the edges and toe hardest, then use it against old soft balls before new ones. A bat that goes straight into a match unknocked will crack, and no bat is replaced for that.

Why is no bat weight listed?

Because SG do not publish one for this model. Willow is a natural material and weight varies cleft to cleft. Tell us the weight you want and we will weigh the stock before it ships.

Should I oil the bat?

A little raw linseed oil on the face, edges and back - never on the splice, the labels or the toe end grain - once before knocking in and once or twice a season after. A teaspoon spread thin, not a soaking. Over-oiling deadens the willow permanently, and it is far commoner than under-oiling.

What bat size do I need?

By height rather than age: size 4 for 4ft9-4ft11, size 5 for 4ft11-5ft2, size 6 for 5ft2-5ft5, Harrow for 5ft5-5ft7, Short Handle for 5ft7-6ft, Long Handle above 6ft. Short Handle is the standard adult size. A bat that is too long is worse than one slightly short - it drags the hands away from the body and ruins the stroke.

How do I look after a bat in this climate?

Keep it out of direct sun and out of a hot car - heat dries willow and opens cracks. Keep it off a damp floor. Store it upright in a bat cover, not leaning under weight. Check the toe after every session, and re-tape the anti-scuff sheet as soon as it lifts. Humidity and heat here are harder on a bat than the ball is.
