Highlights

The best power-to-weight in the range

Two hundred and twenty grams, eleven kilos of drag and 400 metres of PE 1.5. The MagnumLite rotor spins with up to 48 per cent less inertia, which you feel the instant you start turning the handle.

220 g carrying 11 kg of drag

The headline figure - a genuinely light reel with genuinely serious stopping power.

MagnumLite rotor

Up to 48 per cent less rotational inertia, so the reel starts and stops turning almost instantly.

Long Stroke spool

A longer spool stroke lays line in shallower coils, which measurably adds casting distance.

C5000 body

A 5000-size spool on a 4000-size chassis - more line, same weight class.

Product description

About this product

Shimano Vanford – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Dar es Salaam.

Rotational inertia is the thing you feel and never think about. Every time you start winding, you are accelerating the rotor as well as retrieving line, and every time you stop you are stopping it again. Do that a thousand times in an afternoon of lure fishing and the difference between a heavy rotor and a light one is real fatigue. Shimano MagnumLite rotor is designed around exactly that, claiming up to 48 per cent less inertia than a conventional one.

Built around it is a CI4+ body – carbon-reinforced composite, as rigid as aluminium, much lighter, and incapable of corroding – with a cold-forged HAGANE drive gear, X-SHIP twin-supported pinion and MicroModule II gearing. The spool is a Long Stroke design, which moves further up and down as it fills so the line lies in shallower coils and leaves more freely on the cast.

The C5000XG is a 5000-size spool on a 4000-size body: 400 metres of PE 1.5, 11 kg of maximum drag, and 101 cm of line per crank at 6.2:1. At 220 grams that combination is unusual, and it is the whole reason to buy this reel rather than something cheaper with the same drag figure.

X-Protect gives water repellency at the line roller, but this is not a sealed SW-series reel. Shimano position the Vanford for inshore work; it handles the sea well with a proper rinse, and it is not the reel to take offshore every week.

Two generations exist. The F weighs 220 g with a Cross Carbon drag; the newer FA weighs 225 g and adds InfinityXross gearing and DuraCross drag washers. Ask us which is in stock.

Buying a Shimano Vanford in Dar es Salaam

361 Degrees Adventure keeps the shimano vanford at our showroom in Upanga, Dar es Salaam, with delivery countrywide across Tanzania. Come and handle it before you buy, or order online and collect.

Every shimano vanford is checked in store before it leaves us, and our staff use the same kit in the field, so you get an honest answer on fit and sizing rather than a sales pitch.

Not sure which shimano vanford suits you? Call or message the showroom and we will talk you through the options that are actually in stock in Tanzania.

Spare parts and replacements for the shimano vanford are easier to get here than on an overseas order, which matters once the gear is in use.

Questions

Good to know

What does the MagnumLite rotor actually do?

It reduces the mass you have to accelerate every time you start winding. Shimano claim up to 48 per cent less rotational inertia than a conventional rotor. You feel it as an almost instant start-up, and over a long lure session as noticeably less fatigue.

What does C5000XG mean?

C = compact body, so a 5000-size spool on a 4000-size chassis. 5000 = the spool size. XG = extra-high gear. Together: 5000-size line capacity and drag at 4000-size weight, geared fast.

F or FA generation - which should I buy?

The FA is the newer one, 5 g heavier at 225 g, with InfinityXross gearing and DuraCross drag washers instead of Cross Carbon. Gearing, drag and capacity are identical. Either is an excellent reel; ask us what is in stock.

Is it a saltwater reel?

It carries X-Protect water repellency and Shimano describe it as suited to inshore environments, but it is not a sealed SW-series reel. Use it inshore, rinse it properly, and buy a Spheros SW if you fish offshore every week.

What can I catch with it around Dar es Salaam?

Kingfish, queenfish, barracuda, trevally and snapper on lures from a boat, a jetty or the rocks, and light offshore jigging. Inland it is a superb Nile perch and tigerfish reel.

What rod should I pair it with?

A 7 ft to 9 ft lure rod rated 15-50 g. At 220 g it balances beautifully on a light rod - that is what the money buys.

Is 11 kg of drag really usable on a 220 g reel?

Yes, because the CI4+ body is rigid enough not to flex under it. That is the point of the material: on a reel with a soft body, high drag settings twist the frame and the gears stop meshing properly.

How do I look after it in salt water?

Rinse under a gentle spray of fresh water after every sea session - never a hard jet - then stand it upright to drain and dry. Back the drag off before storage, and oil the handle knob and bail pivot every few trips.
