Highlights

Capacity where it counts

460 metres of PE 1.5 on the spool and 91 cm of line per crank. For beach and boat fishing, what you actually need is line and pickup - and this is the cheapest way to get both from Shimano.

460 m of PE 1.5

Deep spool capacity - enough line to let a kingfish run and still get it back.

91 cm per crank

Fast pickup for a low-geared reel, which matters when a fish swims at you.

8 kg maximum drag

Enough to stop most things you will hook off a beach or from a small boat.

G-Free body and AR-C spool

Shimano's balance and casting geometry, at an entry-level price.

Product description

About this product

Shimano Nexave – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Tanzania.

Once you move from jetty fishing to the beach or a boat, the reel specification that starts to matter is capacity. A fish that runs 150 metres on a 4000 reel leaves you watching your backing knot; the same run on a 6000 leaves you with line to spare. The Nexave 6000FE is the cheapest way Shimano offers that capacity – 460 metres of PE 1.5, or 240 metres of 0.35 mm mono.

Gearing is deliberately low at 4.9:1, which is what gives it cranking power against a heavy load, and the large spool still returns 91 cm of line per crank – as much as a smaller reel with much faster gearing. That combination, torque and pickup, is exactly what a big-water reel needs.

The build is honest entry level: a graphite body and rotor, 3+1 bearings, and Shimano’s G-Free body geometry and AR-C spool. There is no metal body, no water sealing and no HAGANE gear – it is a value reel that happens to be big. Rinse it after every sea trip and it will do years of work; leave it salty and it will not.

Off Dar es Salaam it suits beach and rock fishing for kingfish, queenfish and barracuda, bottom fishing from a boat for snapper and grouper, and inland it is a serious Nile perch and catfish reel for Lake Victoria and Lake Tanganyika.

Buying a Shimano Nexave in Tanzania

361 Degrees Adventure keeps the shimano nexave at our showroom in Upanga, Dar es Salaam, with delivery countrywide across Tanzania. Come and handle it before you buy, or order online and collect.

Every shimano nexave is checked in store before it leaves us, and our staff use the same kit in the field, so you get an honest answer on fit and sizing rather than a sales pitch.

Not sure which shimano nexave suits you? Call or message the showroom and we will talk you through the options that are actually in stock in Dar es Salaam.

Spare parts and replacements for the shimano nexave are easier to get here than on an overseas order, which matters once the gear is in use.

Questions

Good to know

6000 or 8000 - which should I buy?

The 8000 holds more line and returns a fraction more per crank; the 6000 is the better balance on a rod under about 10 ft and costs less. If you are beach fishing or targeting big fish that run hard, take the 8000. For general boat and shore work, the 6000.

Is 8 kg of drag enough for the sea?

For shore fishing, bottom fishing and most inshore work, yes. For offshore popping or big pelagics you want a sealed saltwater reel with more drag - the Spheros SW is the reel for that.

What rod should I pair it with?

A 9 ft to 10 ft shore rod, or an 8 ft boat rod. At 595 g it wants a rod with some weight to it; on a light rod it will feel nose-heavy.

What can I catch with it around Dar es Salaam?

Kingfish, queenfish, barracuda and trevally off the beaches and rocks; snapper, grouper and emperor bottom fishing from a boat. Inland it is a proper Nile perch and catfish reel for the big lakes.

What do the letters after the model number mean?

On Shimano spinning reels the two-letter code is drag type plus generation: F = front drag, and the second letter steps forward with each release (FE, FI, FJ and so on). A C in front of the size means a compact body carrying a larger spool. HG = high gear, XG = extra-high gear, PG = power gear, S = shallow spool.

Is it a saltwater reel?

It is not a sealed SW-series reel - Shimano does not give it a saltwater rating. It works perfectly well in the sea if you rinse and dry it properly after each trip. If you fish salt water every week, buy a sealed reel instead.

Should I use mono or braid?

Braid for casting distance and bite detection, mono for bottom fishing where its stretch cushions a lunge. The spool takes 460 m of PE 1.5 or 240 m of 0.35 mm mono.

How do I look after a reel in salt water?

Rinse it under a gentle spray of fresh water after every sea session - never a hard jet, which drives salt past the seals - then stand it upright to drain and dry. Back the drag right off before storage so the washers are not compressed, and put a drop of reel oil on the handle knob and bail pivot every few trips.
