Highlights

The line you need for a long run

350 metres of PE 3, or 390 metres of 0.30 mm mono. When a kingfish turns and goes, capacity is the thing that decides whether you land it.

350 m of PE 3

Serious capacity - the reason to buy an 8000 rather than a 6000.

92 cm per crank

Big spool diameter means fast pickup despite the low 4.9:1 gearing.

8 kg maximum drag

Enough for most shore and inshore fish, with plenty of line behind it.

70 mm handle

A long crank arm for leverage when you are winding against a heavy load.

Product description

About this product

Shimano Nexave – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Dar es Salaam.

The 8000 is the top of the Nexave range and the reason most people buy one: line capacity. Three hundred and fifty metres of PE 3, or 390 metres of 0.30 mm mono, is enough to let a kingfish or a big trevally run properly rather than emptying the spool in the first thirty seconds. For beach fishing, where the fish runs parallel to the shore and you cannot follow it, that matters more than almost anything else on the specification sheet.

The gearing stays at 4.9:1 for torque, and because the spool is larger the reel still returns 92 cm of line per crank. The handle is 70 mm, which gives you the leverage to wind steadily against a load rather than snatching at it.

The rest is entry-level and honest about it: graphite body and rotor, 3+1 bearings, G-Free body geometry and the AR-C spool. No metal body, no sealing, no HAGANE gear. This is the reel you buy when you need capacity and a sensible price and you are prepared to look after it. Rinse it after every sea session.

One note on the published weight. Shimano’s own specification table lists the 8000 at 580 g – lighter than the 6000 at 595 g – which is almost certainly a transposition in their table rather than reality. We have published their figure as printed rather than quietly correcting it; if the exact weight matters to you, ask us and we will put one on the scales in the shop.

Buying a Shimano Nexave in Dar es Salaam

361 Degrees Adventure keeps the shimano nexave at our showroom in Upanga, Dar es Salaam, with delivery countrywide across Tanzania. Come and handle it before you buy, or order online and collect.

Every shimano nexave is checked in store before it leaves us, and our staff use the same kit in the field, so you get an honest answer on fit and sizing rather than a sales pitch.

Not sure which shimano nexave suits you? Call or message the showroom and we will talk you through the options that are actually in stock in Tanzania.

Spare parts and replacements for the shimano nexave are easier to get here than on an overseas order, which matters once the gear is in use.

Questions

Good to know

Why is the 8000 listed as lighter than the 6000?

Because that is what Shimano's own specification table says - 580 g for the 8000 against 595 g for the 6000. It is almost certainly an error in their table, since a larger reel is not normally lighter. We have published their figure as printed rather than silently correcting it. Ask us and we will weigh one in the shop.

8000 or 6000 - which should I buy?

The 8000 for capacity: 350 m of PE 3 against the 6000's 230 m. Take it if you fish the beach, target fish that run hard, or want line to spare. The 6000 is cheaper and balances better on a shorter rod.

Is 8 kg of drag enough?

For shore fishing and inshore boat work, yes. Note that drag and capacity are different problems: this reel gives you a lot of line and a moderate drag, which suits letting a fish run and tiring it out rather than stopping it dead.

What rod should I pair it with?

A 9 ft to 11 ft surf or shore rod, or a heavier boat rod. At around 580 g it needs a rod with some substance to balance it.

What can I catch with it here?

Kingfish, queenfish, trevally and barracuda off the beaches and rocks around Dar es Salaam and Kigamboni; snapper, grouper and emperor bottom fishing from a boat. Inland it is a strong Nile perch reel.

What do the letters after the model number mean?

On Shimano spinning reels the two-letter code is drag type plus generation: F = front drag, and the second letter steps forward with each release (FE, FI, FJ and so on). A C in front of the size means a compact body carrying a larger spool. HG = high gear, XG = extra-high gear, PG = power gear, S = shallow spool.

Is it a saltwater reel?

Not a sealed SW-series one - Shimano gives it no saltwater rating. It works in the sea if you rinse and dry it after every trip. For weekly sea use buy a sealed reel such as the Spheros SW.

How do I look after a reel in salt water?

Rinse it under a gentle spray of fresh water after every sea session - never a hard jet, which drives salt past the seals - then stand it upright to drain and dry. Back the drag right off before storage so the washers are not compressed, and put a drop of reel oil on the handle knob and bail pivot every few trips.
